After Floyd Mayweather’s “Broken Promises”, Savannah Marshall Wanted to Retire

This Saturday on 10th September, inside the O2 Arena, Greenwich, Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall will finally settle their score. Both are orthodox fighters and have an identical record of 12 wins with no losses yet to spare. Four titles, which would include the IBF World Middle, the WBA World Middle, the WBC World Middle, and the WBO World Middle, will be put on the line. With only a few days left to her bout, Marshall revealed the time the one and only Mayweather Promotions wanted to sign her, but she realized “broken promises” to retire as undisputed champion of the world.
Marshall said, “I believe the fight between me and Claressa is the biggest fight out there in female boxing. Growing up I’ve struggled with social anxiety. Everyone coming to watch you. Everyone talking about you. I had the news that Mayweather Promotions wanted to sign me. I realized this spot can be full of broken promises. I was gonna retire, so becoming an undisputed champion would be amazing.”

Marshall, who started boxing at the age of only 11, will head towards one of the biggest fights of her life this Saturday on September 10th. With four titles and the dream to retire as the undisputed champion of the world on the line, she will face ‘T-Rex’, a rising prospect in women’s boxing.

Marshall is right now 31 years old and has a professional record of 0 losses and 12 wins. So far, she’s battled 44 rounds and has won 83.33% that is 10 of her bouts by way of a knockout. She stands 5′ 11½″ tall and has a reach of 182cm. On the other hand, Shields is only 27 and has a similar unbeaten record of 12 wins. Although she has also had 12 fights, Shields have fought 101 rounds in total. However, Shields stand 5′ 8″ tall and lacks 9cm of a reach compared to Marshall.
Lately, Marshall had even claimed that Shields was aiming for the Mayweather effect to generate the audience for her fights. Back then Marshall had said, ““Look, I respect Claressa. What she’s done for the sport is amazing. I think she’s just an absolute headache. You’re this world champion. Act like it. I think she’s going for the Mayweather effect. She’s trying to get the haters to watch her. But the reality is no one watches her. So, it’s not really working out for her, is it?”
