Gennady Golovkin suffered his maiden professional loss against Canelo Alvarez back in 2018, which has set the score at 0-1-1 for the Kazakh star in two encounters with the current P4P king. That said, a trilogy collision can happen this year if both men win their upcoming fights.

Alvarez will reportedly face Dmitry Bivol in May at 175 lbs, and Golovkin will enter into a 160 lbs unification clash against Ryota Murata shortly. On gaining the respective wins, the trilogy fight will go down the line at 168 lbs. While Golovkin will soon turn 40, he may seem an underdog in the potential trilogy against Canelo Alvarez.

However, David Benavidez doesn’t feel the same. He recently connected with ESNews and discussed why Gennady Golovkin can appear a massive favorite opposite Canelo Alvarez, depending on the current scenarios.

“GGG, I feel like he has that mental note with Canelo [Alvarez] that. You know, Canelo has never hurt him. Suppose everybody saying, he can hurt him [GGG] now. But Golovkin has knocked everybody ever since. He still be knocking everybody out. It’s just that he hasn’t fought in a while,” said David Benavidez.

Benavidez further compared the situation to Marquez vs. Pacquiao 4 and pinpointed how Marquez could stop ‘Pac-Man’ despite his age in their fourth fight. While Golovkin has also been on a flawless run since the loss against Alvarez, David Benavidez apparently has his faith in GGG.

Golovkin is an A-listed puncher and has experienced Alvarez’s power previously. Therefore, it will be wrong to write away his chances, although Canelo Alvarez appears to be in the best years of his boxing career.

Gennady Golovkin can see his first fight against Canelo Alvarez as a blueprint

The first bout between Golovkin and Alvarez in 2017 ended up in a controversial split decision draw. Both men troubled each other throughout the 12-rounds and it was an extremely close contest. According to several pundits, Gennady Golovkin did enough to secure the win. He dominated the initial rounds and forced Alvarez to back off.

Well, the judges didn’t see it as enough to award GGG the win. The re-match was completely different from the first fight as Alvarez outworked GGG via decision and gained momentum in their rivalry. While a third collision is now onboard, GGG can look back to the first fight, make a few adjustments and craft his plans on beating the Mexican superstar.
