Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and his former promoter Oscar De La Hoya have had a rocky and tumultuous relationship over the past few years. The boxing legend was Alvarez’s first major promoter, being with him since 2010 as the Mexican superstar would rise through the ranks of the sport.

However, things would change in 2019 after Alvarez would have some disagreements with De La Hoya about his new contract. In 2018, Saul and DAZN agreed to the richest deal in boxing history. Alvarez would fight on DAZN for his next 11 fights at a price of $365 million. However, he then sued both Golden Boy and DAZN alleging breach of contract, fraud, and other claims. They settled the lawsuit in November 2020, with Alvarez becoming a free agent. Despite this, it seems that ‘Golden Boy’ is ready to rekindle his relationship with his former client.

Oscar De La Hoya wants Canelo Alvarez to return to his promotion

In a recent interview with DAZN, the former champion was asked if he would ever work with Alvarez again. De La Hoya claimed that in a sport like boxing where promoters can make or break fighters, he feels he will get the Mexican to work with him once more. He also added that he wanted to do a mega fight with ‘Saul’.

I think that if the opportunity presents itself, you never know in boxing. Boxing whether you’re inside the ring, you’re one punch away from becoming a superstar or becoming a gym fighter outside the ring, you know. We have the knowledge, we have the expertise. You know we’re promoters who know what they are doing. So I strongly feel that imagine, Canelo coming to Golden Boy for a mega-fight.” said De La Hoya.

De La Hoya’s openness to rekindle his relationship with Alvarez can be seen as a positive development for boxing fans. The two had a successful partnership in the past, with the promoter also giving his take on how his fighter was poached. Moreover, if they are able to put their past differences aside and work together again, it could lead to more exciting fights and opportunities for the sport.

De La Hoya wants Alvarez to build his legacy

Later in the interview, De La Hoya stated that he wanted the best for his former client. He added that he wanted ‘Saul’ to build upon his legacy and get a few great fights as he is now at the tail end of his career. “I wish Canelo all the best and you know he is building his legacy and I want him to have these major fights to continue building his legacy because you know he’s at the tail end of his career” he added.
