What happened to Choi Hyun-mi?

The path towards undisputed title got cleared for Alycia Baumgardner when WBA placed title holder Choi Hyun-mi to “Champion in Recess” status due to her reported injury. As per Boxing Scene, they declared, “Based upon the [championship] Rules, and the finding of the WBA Medical Committee, the WBA places Ms. Hyun Mi Choi as Champion in Recess of the WBA World Female Super Featherweight division for a period no longer than the date of the medical clearance referred to below. Ms. Baumgardner will contend for the vacant WBA title against the next leading available contender ranked by the WBA for a bout to take place no later than March 31, 2023.”

Before the decision took place, the WBA Centennial Convention in Orlando, Florida, planned a ‘purse bid hearing’ for the Baumgardner-Choi fight. But Choi Hyun-mi, whose record is twenty wins and one draw, reportedly sought a medical exception from the battle against Baumgardner.

The thirty-two-year-old Choi Hyun-mi can no longer completely block Baumgardner’s advancement. However, she remains a danger. The WBA resolution states that once Choi gets medical clearance to return to boxing, she will be given priority to reclaim her previous championship title.
