Gervonta Davis dismisses Ryan Garcia’s claims about the rehydration clause

In a recent interview with Complex, Davis revealed that ‘KingRy’s’ claims about the clause were a lie. According to Garcia’s claims, the contract reportedly stipulates that he could not gain more than a certain amount of weight after the weigh-in. Moreover, he also claimed that he could not drink water for three days. He also claimed that he had to carefully monitor his weight and eat small portions of food to avoid going over the limit. However, Davis was quick to refute these claims, stating that such a clause would be against the rules of the sport.

“He was telling people that I put it in the contract that he can’t drink water or eat for 3 days, like that’s not true. You can’t even have that in the sport of boxing. That’s a complete bold-faced lie,” said Davis.

Weight cutting is a common practice in boxing, where fighters attempt to lose as much weight as possible before the weigh-in to gain a size and strength advantage over their opponent. This might be the reason why Davis opted to put in a rehydration clause. However, according to him, Garcia has been exaggerating the extent of the contract.

Davis opens up on why he put the rehydration clause in the contract

Davis has defended the rehydration clause in his contract with Garcia for their upcoming fight. During the first press conference for the fight, he stated that as a smaller fighter, he needed the clause for protection. Moreover, he claimed that Garcia will be around 170 to 180 pounds before the fight which would give him a huge advantage.

He’s a bigger fighter and he’s only growing. He’s coming from like 170, 180. Why would I not have a rehydration clause in there? So he can blow back up to 150, 160 around the time we fight? No. I’m not dumb,” he said.

‘Tank’ Davis also emphasized that he did not create the clause out of malice. He also expressed confidence that he would win the fight, regardless of the rehydration clause. The controversy over the clause has sparked a debate about the fairness of such restrictions in boxing. However, Davis believes that it is a necessary precaution to ensure the safety and integrity of the sport.
