It seems like Canelo Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya’s relationship might not yet have fully healed since the Mexican’s departure from the promotion in 2020.

Alvarez signed possibly the biggest deal in boxing with DAZN in 2018, which paid him $365 million for 11 fights. But, sued both Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN for not being able to give him a suitable opponent. The contract was then dissolved after three fights and Alvarez then signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions.

Oscar De La Hoya slams Eddie Hearn

De La Hoya recently made an appearance on the MMA show hosted by Ariel Helwani and had a lot to say about Alvarez and his new promoter.

Helwani asks Golden Boy if he would have booked the fight between Alvarez and Dimitri Bivol and he had this to say,” No, never because it was a lose-lose situation for everybody, nobody knew Bivol whatsoever. I would have promoted Bivol to get a bigger name because nobody knew who he was before he fought Canelo. I mean he was irrelevant, he was nobody”

It seemed that De La Hoya did not want Alvarez to face Bivol, due to the risk of facing a bigger opponent and Bivol’s lack of star power.

He then takes shots at Alvarez’s current promoter Eddie Hearn and questions his decision-making,” Canelo has a promoter now that obviously doesn’t come from a boxing world, he doesn’t really know the ‘fight game’ and he got Canelo beat, it was the wrong style. Las Vegas had no buzz whatsoever. Canelo is the superstar of the game right now. Eddie Hearn didn’t do no justice to Canelo when he faced him against Bivol.”

He feels that Canelo is one of the biggest names in boxing right now and that pitting him against an unknown fighter like Bivol didn’t do ‘Justice’ for the Mexican boxer.

It seems De La Hoya might not have a lot of animosity against Alvarez, moreover, he has come out in many interviews and has also praised him a lot of times. On the other hand, Alvarez does not share these feelings and is still not on speaking terms with De La Hoya. It looks like Alvarez is ready to leave this in the past and focus on his future as he is set to face Gennady Golovkin and complete their trilogy fight on September 17th. Alvarez will look to build some momentum before his rematch against Bivol, which is likely to happen. Therefore, this fight against GGG will be crucial in more than one way.
