On May 22nd, 2004, then ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd Mayweather went up against DeMarcus Corley in a WBC world light-welterweight title eliminator fight. Mayweather dominated the fight landing one powerful shot after another on Corley. As a result, Corley hit the canvas twice – once in the 8th and then in the 10th round of the fight.

Mayweather was 27 years old at the time, but considering what he would later do, one might as well say that he hadn’t yet entered his prime. Yet Mayweather was too heavy for Corley to handle that night. He was fast, accurate, and above all, determined to dismantle Corley. At one point in the fight, ‘Pretty Boy’ stared Corley and forbade him to cry. In the fourth round of the fight, although Corley rattled Mayweather, the latter found his composure and executed his game plan attentively with vigour and speed.

In the same vein, one praised Mayweather by saying: “Anyone who knows Boxing, knows how good Mayweather is.

However, one asked, “How come he didn’t fight like that against Maidana or Pacquiao? Don’t make it seem like he was a brawler…”

Well, when Mayweather fought Corley he was 27. By the time he fought Maidana and Pacquiao, he was 37 and 38, respectively. Of course, Mayweather had slowed down. However, he nonetheless exhibited the maturity of a fighter who had fought some of the best in boxing and understood the sport so well.
