After his trilogy fight with Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin vacated his IBF Middleweight title in February this year. Following the incident, the WBA ordered ‘GGG’ a mandatory defense against Erislandy Lara. However, in March, stating he no longer wished to see the process with Lara getting dragged out, Golovkin vacated his WBA title too. Although the Kazakhstani fighter remained “committed to fighting again,” his representative informed the WBA that the 41-year-old did not immediately look forward to “planning and arranging his next bout“.

But, since ‘GGG’ still held his IBO title, fans remained hopeful. However, a cloud of uncertainty greeted them when in June the boxer let go of his IBO title and subsequently abandoned his champion status. While Golovkin left his fans uncertain about his career in pro boxing, several people claimed the former unified Middleweight champion was out of shape after a recent video went viral. At this, undisputed Lightweight champion Devin Haney defended ‘GGG’.

According to Haney, it is “crazy” that people have to worry about Golovkin’s weight despite what the latter has done to boxing. In his opinion, since “the champ is retired,” he shall have the liberty to become as “big as a house“. Likewise, taking to X, ‘The Dream’ said, “He has been dedicated to the sport of boxing his whole life. ‘GGG’ has paid his dues, let him live now.” Following Haney’s tweet, while several fans were in agreement with ‘The Dream,’ some objected to the undisputed lightweight champion calling Golovkin retired.

According to one, ‘GGG’, who shocked fans by vacating his titles, is simply “bulking” up.

On the other hand, one claimed Golovkin “ducked nobody“.

However, one stated, “He’s not retired“.

Similarly, one declared that ‘GGG’ is yet to officially retire from the sport.

In the same vein, besides stating that Golovkin didn’t actually retire, one encouraged the boxer to do what he liked.

Honestly, while Golovkin does not look entirely out of shape, the 41-year-old should, at this point, enjoy life. Undoubtedly, he has left an indelible mark on boxing and continues to inspire devotees of the sport. However, while fans wish to see him back in the ring, it is expected that the Kazakhstani boxer will soon announce his plans too. Meanwhile, what do you think of Haney’s latest tweet?
