The clouds of uncertainty are hovering over Devin Haney (31-0) vs. Ryan Garcia (24-1). Amid the growing concerns about the challenger’s mental health and his commitment to the fight, rumors of the fight getting shelved are gaining traction. However, Shakur Stevenson (21-0) has decided to salvage the event scheduled for April 20 at Barclays Center.

‘KingRy’s social media shenanigans and antics have attracted flak and concern among fans. While the likes of Bernard Hopkins have labeled it a ploy to get in the WBC champion’s head, Oscar De La Hoya believes it is mere trolling. But Garcia’s theatrics have mandated that the commission and sanctioning bodies tread carefully around him. Therefore, Haney’s team is already on the lookout for backup opponents. It seems Stevenson has publicly thrown his name into the mix.

Stevenson, 26, turned to his X-handle and revealed he had reached out to Bill Haney. He responded to the claim of Boxing Kingdom, which is anticipating the news of the cancellation of Haney vs. Garcia. Stevenson has offered to serve as the backup, despite Arnold Barboza Jr. claiming he has reserved the right already.

The WBC lightweight champion wrote, Damn I reached out to Bill didn’t get a reply but we would love to step in especially in NY.. We would sell out and it’s a big fight.”

It’s unsure whether Haney’s team would opt for the Newark native’s services, as both have a similar boxing style. Both are technically sound fighters and prefer fighting more on the back foot. Some might question Stevenson’s claim of selling out, as he is coming off a snooze fest against Edwin De Los Santos. So, the allure of Haney vs. Stevenson might be a bit off for some fans who want quick and high-paced action.

Meanwhile, Garcia, 25, had decided to turn off social media to focus on the Devin Haney fight. But fans are not certain whether it is enough to control the damage he has done. It remains to be seen whether Garcia pulls out of the fight, as he is the one who actively pursued the fight to realize his dream of becoming a champion.
