Will Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez finally share the ring in summer this year? While Canelo Alvarez is the undisputed Super-Middleweight champion, David Benavidez possesses the WBC Interim Super-Middleweight title. In this context, ahead of Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade in November last year, the WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said if Benavidez won against Andrade, ‘Red Flag’ would be ratified as Canelo’s WBC mandatory in 2024.

So, will Alvarez face a mandatory challenger in Benavidez with the WBC title on the line? Speaking to Boxing Social, Mauricio Sulaiman revealed that Canelo vs. Benavidez was possible. In addition, he informed the fans that the two were already negotiating.

In his reply, Sulaiman said, “Yes, it’s very possible. Benavidez confirms his status as mandatory in March if Canelo has a fight for May.” “They are in the same company. They’re already talking. They’ve been negotiating,” added the WBC President. “We’re leaving them to negotiate. We’ll see what happens for May. And then the WBC can intervene,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, it is being speculated that Alvarez will fight an American opponent on May 4th, Cinco de Mayo weekend. Since Jermall Charlo promised he would avenge his brother’s loss to Canelo, several people thought the Mexican would face ‘Hit Man’. However, one must not also overlook the fact that David Benavidez is also an American. And now that Mauricio Sulaiman has revealed that Canelo and David are negotiating, we can certainly hope that Alvarez will face Benavidez on May 4th this year.
