Canelo Alvarez went the distance with his undisputed rival, Jermell Charlo, on Saturday night. The unanimous decision (119-108, 118-109, 118-109) was declared in favor of the still undisputed super middleweight champion. Moreover, his feats in this fight didn’t stop there. Alvarez also managed to knock down Charlo in the seventh round. Thus making history by dropping the boxer for the second time in his career. Charlo spent more time near the ropes than the center of the ring.

The Lafayette-born boxer struggled to close the distance against the Mexican boxer. But losing against Alvarez was not the only loss Charlo had to face. As per the WBO protocol, he has lost his undisputed status in the super welterweight division. In his attempt to acquire Alvarez’s belts, he couldn’t retain his title at the 154. Why did this happen? What happened to Jermell Charlo’s undisputed status at 154 lbs?

After Jermell Charlo couldn’t go against Tim Tszyu back in January 2023 because of his left-hand injury, the fight was postponed indefinitely. Later in the year, Charlo announced that he was making a return to the ring. He stated that he’d be moving two weight classes to face Canelo Alvarez, and the WBO stepped in.

At the time of the announcement, the WBO released a statement that before he faces Alvarez, he’ll have to pick a bout against the interim WBO super welterweight champion. And if he fails to do that, then he’d be stripped of his WBO title instantly, and the organization would give him the time to make a decision till the Las Vegas fight. The WBO was lenient to let Charlo vs. Alvarez be the undisputed vs. undisputed clash.

WBO promoted Tim Tszyu to the Champion status

The WBO attempt to get the title fight to the Australian orthodox boxer, Tim Tszyu, has been prevalent since 2021. The WBO announced Tszyu as the mandatory challenger for Brian Castano. However, the fight wasn’t an immediate deal, as the WBO allowed the rematch between Charlo and Castano in May 2022, where Castano lost his WBO title and Charlo emerged as the undisputed champion.

After this fight, Tim Tszyu was matched up with Jermell Charlo for a fight on January 28. But even that fight couldn’t come to fruition, as Charlo broke his left hand during training. So, when Charlo announced his comeback but did not acknowledge his pre-planned bout against Tim Tszyu, the WBO took matters into their own hands. Charlo knew that he’d be stripped of his title if he stepped inside the ring against Canelo Alvarez.

This is how Tszyu got himself the regular WBO title, directly, without having to fight for it. Even though Charlo has shown interest in fighting Terence Crawford next.
