The catchweight bout at 136 lbs. arguably ended boxing’s long search for a face. Gervonta Davis stopped Ryan Garcia in the seventh round. As a result, many fans, critics, and pundits invoked a long-held belief that the former entered the space to represent the sport. The Baltimorean achieved the feat with the entire Mayweather machinery, including CEO Leonard Ellerbe, by his side, assisting him as he waded through the negotiations right up to the time when referee Thomas Taylor raised his hands.
Probably that’s why when the recent impasse between Oscar De La Hoya and Ryan Garcia reached his doorsteps, Ellerbe couldn’t help but let loose a volley of rebuttals. So, it kicked off with a few messages De La Hoya tweeted yesterday. First, he said, “Wtf @RyanGarcia, it’s been almost two months, and you’re still crying about the post presser? The blame for your loss is on YOU and your “advisor,” Lupe. He is the only one who pushed you to accept that INSANE rehydration clause, and THAT is the reason you lost. Man up. Own that.” Soon another tweet followed.
Also, you keep saying “tanks team offered more support for you” blah blah blah. Bro they SET YOU UP TO LOSE with that rehydration clause and most importantly…AL HAYMON DIDNT EVEN SHOW UP THE ENTIRE WEEK. Actually, he NEVER shows up. How’s that for “support”???

It was hard for Ellerbe to miss the dissing. Posting a response, he told the former world champion-turned-promoter to understand the situation instead of getting angry over his charge. He said that in the end, Garcia lost the bout to a more skillful boxer. Ellerbe highlighted that the Californian received a considerable amount, and that’s what it is all about. He said, “…Bro, you know how crazy that sounds? You are really embarrassing yourself and your company. I got a lil time 2day I will drag yo ass w receipts. You need to chill.”
For those pointing fingers at Ryan Garcia, Leonard Ellerbe has a piece of advice
However, a user, @spindadaleak, intervened. He said there’s nothing unreasonable in what De La Hoya mentioned. More so, being a businessman himself, Ellerbe should be able to understand ‘The Golden Boy’s’ predicament. But the user continued that Mayweather CEO wouldn’t do so because of his apparent dislike for De La Hoya. Additionally, the latter remained truthful and insisted that Garcia is not cut out for ‘Tank’ Davis. According to the user, the fight would have occurred even at 140 lbs.
You sound like Ryan was some chump GTFOH. He been wanted the fight, he had an opportunity to go win a big fight came up short but made life changing money. If you a fighter who tf is turning down life changing money in a fight you asked for and believed you were going to win?🤦🏽♂️ https://t.co/MU54rZ3kuf

But pat came the reply from Ellerbe, who insisted that Garcia was not a senseless fighter. He knew what he was getting into. He hankered after the match, and even though it didn’t turn out the way he wanted, it filled his wallet handsomely. Only an out-of-his-mind boxer would refute such an offer to take home such a big reward from a contest he openly insisted upon.

Long credited for turning Mayweather Promotions into a significant brand, Leonard Ellerbe is now a force to reckon with in the boxing world. His words matter. So even before the big fight at the T Mobile Arena, he mentioned during an interview with Ariel Helwani that Oscar De La Hoya never wanted the match. However, the talks passed through thanks to Ryan Garcia’s insistence. De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions takes care of Garcia.
