When it comes to destructive knockout power in the boxing world, few names command as much respect and fear as Mike Tyson and Deontay Wilder. Both Tyson and Wilder have showcased their ability to deliver devastating punches that can instantly end a fight and leave opponents in a heap on the canvas.

Moreover, sports commentator Stephen A. Smith thinks ‘The Bronze Bomber’ has a lot of other similarities with ‘Iron Mike’ even though he has given up on Wilder’s chances against current WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury. The two have faced each other thrice in the ring with Fury getting victories in 2 of the 3 fights and the first fight being declared a draw.

Stephen A. Smith remains skeptical about Deontay Wilder’s chances against Tyson Fury

In a recent episode of Tyson’s podcast Hotboxin, the two discussed the third fight between the heavyweight titans. Smith made it clear that he no longer wishes to witness a fourth bout between the two heavyweight fighters. However, his sentiments were not to be misconstrued as a lack of respect for Wilder’s abilities.

I don’t want Wilder in the ring with Tyson Fury again. I want to give that up now. Let me explain because I don’t want it to be taken wrong. I have profound respect for Deontay Wilder. He’s got a nuclear right hand. I don’t think that he’s a great boxer, but he’s an elite puncher.” said Smith.

This was not all as the ESPN journalist also pointed out some similarities between Iron Mike and Wilder. He begins by acknowledging the awe-inspiring knockout power possessed by both Wilder and Tyson and also details the willingness of the two fighters to face much larger opponents than themselves.

Moreover, Smith notes that Wilder has followed a similar path, willingly stepping into the ring with opponents much heavier than him, such as the likes of  Fury.

Where he reminds me of you is the fact that he got in the ring with a dude 40 pounds heavier. And you got in the ring with a couple of dudes, “Razor” Ruddock, and a few others that were heavier than you, and what have you. And you took them out. Frank Bruno was even heavier than you, of course, even though he didn’t have that chin. The point that I’m making is that Deontay Wilder deserves all the credit in the world.” he said.

Despite his reservations, Smith’s admiration for Wilder remains intact. He commends Wilder’s courage and willingness to take on challenges that others might shy away from. Moreover, many have touted ‘The Bronze Bomber’ as the best heavyweight boxer in the world without Tyson Furyin the picture. It is this fearless mentality and knockout power that draws comparisons to the legendary Tyson and put him in a league of all-time greats.
