Subriel Matias Rejects Huge $1.5 Million Offer to Fight Teofimo Lopez After Denying Bill Haney’s $4 Million Claim

Subriel Matias and his team received a mouthful from Bill Haney over a reported $4 million offer they made to fight Devin Haney. The Puerto Rican boxer’s camp, though, subsequently denied their participation in any sort of discussion to square up the new WBC light welterweight champion.
The fans were just settling down with the news when another update filtered in. It seems Teofimo Lopez‘s $1.5 million offer didn’t have much of an appeal for Subriel Matias. Reportedly, ‘The Pride of Maternillo’ has refused to go with it. The details came up in the interview his trainer had with the ‘Mill City Boxing’ podcast.

Coach Panda said, “That there was an offer made and take the offer, so that’s when our team said okay, there was an offer, you know, an offer, I think it was $1.5 million. Anybody else would have jumped on it. Anybody else would have said, dang, that’s an opportunity of a lifetime, but I think we have a responsible team behind us.” Earlier, he shared that Teofimo Lopez was well aware of what was happening. They had a line-up in mind for a February bout.

However, according to Panda, Subriel Matias doesn’t live an impoverished life. The host mentioned that it was his team that made the initial noise. However, the trainer declined and shared that the offer came first from Lopez’s corner.

The first chapter of the saga opened up with Bill Haney talking about upcoming fights for his champion son with Fight Hub TV‘s Marcos Villegas. He gave a hint of Devin Haney moving up a division to 147 pounds. Then he also took up Subriel Matias’s name. Villegas said that many consider the IBF light welterweight champion from Puerto Rico the ‘boogeyman’ of the division.
But Bill Haney countered, “How much Boogie he got in him, man?” He continued, “You know, I gave uh Peter Kahn, a call about it, and then, you know, he didn’t sound too much boogy man to me at $4 million, you know.” So he told the person (Peter Kahn) that Devin Haney appeared keen about the prospect of fighting Matias. However, Kahn told him that the Puerto Rican champion is apparently seeking $4 million.
Haney senior said, “I call him, said Devin says, You know, uh, let’s talk…he said he said the kid wanted $4 million…waited about 30 more minutes and called him back, and he says no really, the kid wants $4 million. I said well, the kid only made a couple hundred thousand then, so um, we didn’t make $4 million to go to Australia; we made 2.8. Peter Khan knows that um we didn’t make $4 million to go back uh as undisputed…”
According to Bill Haney, that might have been a tactic for not bringing the project to fruition.

Eli Seckbach from ESNEWS shared the footage with a voiceover of an interview with Trainer Panda. Seckbach asked him about Devin Haney’s performance and the possibilities of a match with his pupil. After congratulating ‘The Dream,’ Panda said that a fight with Matias could be a guaranteed money spinner. He also heard about Bill Haney’s keenness about the matchup.
So Eli Seckbach mentioned that Hany senior had already spoken to Peter Kahn. He also added, “If I’am not mistaken, Peter doesn’t work with you guys; he works with Kambosos, or used to work with Kambosos.” Panda asked him back, “Who’s Peter Kahn?” Seckbach clarified that he is a veteran boxing manager. Panda shot back, “No, no, he has nothing to do with our team, with our fighter. Subriel is managed by Pedro Cruz, and he is promoted by Fresh Productions.”

Strictly from a fight perspective, the 140-pound division appears at its exciting best. With the likes of Teofimo Lopez, Subriel Matias, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, and even Richardson Hitchins ruling the roost, any line-up between them would make for a great fight.
