“The Same Week He Announced He Had Mental Health Issues He Was Messing Around With His Girlfriend”: Rival Javier Fortuna on Ryan Garcia

On July 16 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Ryan Garcia will go up against Javier Fortuna. Over 20,000 fans are expected to come to see the fight. Fortuna is expected to test Garcia’s skills since he is a former WBA super featherweight and interim featherweight champion in pro boxing.

Looking into his career, considering the number of fights he has had, Fortuna is more experienced than Ryan Garcia in pro boxing. While Fortuna’s last fight was Rafael Hernandez in February, Garcia last entered the ring in April and fought Emmanuel Tagoe.

With barely two weeks left for the Garcia vs. Fortuna fight, the latter makes a series of startling claims. Here is what the Dominican boxer has been saying.

“I hope he is ready”: Javier Fortuna belittles and cautions Ryan Garcia ahead of the duo’s upcoming fight

Undefeated with eighteen KOs, Ryan Garcia is the current WBC interim lightweight title holder. In addition, under ESPN‘s lightweight divisional ranking, he ranks sixth, four ranks ahead of the Dominican Javier Fortuna. However, Fortuna feels he need not consider Garcia a major threat.

In a recent interview with BoxingScene, this is what Fortuna said: “Ryan is not as big as what everyone makes him out to be. He doesn’t have the capacity and doesn’t have the talent to beat me. I hope he is ready.”

“Ryan’s speed doesn’t faze me. I know how to take that away from him,” he added.

Although Fortuna looks to give the appearance that Ryan Garcia does not bother him, he, in some way, acknowledged his opponent’s speed.

Fortuna on Garcia’s mental health

The bout between Garcia and Fortuna had initially been scheduled for last year in July. However, Garcia reported depression and anxiety and pulled out in April.

Recently, in conversation with BoxingScene, regarding Garcia’s mental health issues, Fortuna added,

Talking about Garcia’s mental health issues, Fortuna made a bold claim. He said, “Ryan doesn’t have any mental health issues. The same week he announced he had mental health issues he was messing around with his girlfriend.”
