“There’s Always Something Underneath the Table”: Mike Tyson Throws Promoters Under the Bus by Revealing Dark Truth

Boxing legend Mike Tyson has been involved with the sport for more than four decades becoming one of its most iconic and polarizing figures. Even after retiring from the sport, the former heavyweight champion has still been involved with the sport, making a lot of appearances at fights and enticing boxing matches.

Moreover, the 56-year-old has now made his way to Saudi Arabia to witness YouTube sensation Jake Paul  take on Tommy Fury on February 25. Despite this, he is not really happy with the state of boxing as he exposed the dark reality behind the sport and even threw boxing promoters under the bus.

In an interview with Fight Hype, Tyson was asked how the Saudi Prince’s vision will change boxing. ‘Iron Mike’ replied to this question stating that it will solve the problem of promoters using sneaky tactics to skim money off of fighters and would allow for more transparency. Moreover, he even exposed boxing promoters claiming that they often work together despite being competitors.

It changes in one fundamental perspective that in boxing all of the money. Everything is not on the table in boxing there’s always something underneath the table. The whole thing is not on the table and that’s where boxing has its first fundamental problem. Not telling the truth be it promoters or managers. They all work together believe it or not though they are nemeses they still work together.” said Tyson

There are many boxers who has taken a stand against such major flaws in the sport, with Tyson being another voice. Moreover, ‘Iron Mike’ once even accused his former promoter Don King OF not paying him his fair share for fights and stealing money from him. This was the reason why Iron Mike decided to sue his former promoter to the tune of $100 million.

The former heavyweight champion was having none of King’s fraudulent tactics after he went bankrupt back in 2oo4. Tyson would then sue the King for $100 million to pay off his debts and creditors. The lawsuit would eventually be settled for $14 million. However, this money was not given to Tyson but rather to pay off the people he owed.

For Tyson, King perfectly portrayed why he is so skeptical of promoters even to this day, Moreover, despite the changes we have seen in the business of modern boxing, Iron Mike still feels that promoters skim off fighters with under-the-table deals.
