In the world of boxing, it’s not uncommon for fighters and promoters to engage in trash talk and hype up potential fights. Eddie Hearn, a well-known boxing promoter, recently took a jab at the current WBC super-middleweight champion David Benavidez and boxing legend Mike Tyson.

Tyson who is a fan of Benavidez calls him ‘The Mexican Monster’, a nickname he fondly uses for the undefeated prospect. However, according to Hearn, there is only one ‘Mexican Monster’ and it is not Benavidez but his client and super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Both fighters have long been pitted against each other being two of the best from their country. Despite this, the British promoter feels that Saul has the edge over his fellow countryman.

Eddie Hearn throws shade at David Benavidez and sends a message to Mike Tyson

In an interview with Little Giant Boxing, Hearn touted Benavidez as a great fighter. However, he claimed that there was only one ‘Mexican Monster’ which is Alvarez. Moreover, he also pointed out that the super middleweight champion was able to knock out Caleb Plant which Benavidez could not do despite winning in a dominant fashion.

“He’s a good fighter, but there’s only one Mexican monster, and that’s Saul Canelo Alvarez did knock out Caleb Plant,” said Hearn. This message is certainly a jibe at both Benavidez and Tyson from the British promoter. However, it’s no secret that Alvarez has been dominating the boxing world for quite some time now.

The Mexican superstar has won titles in four different weight classes and has defeated some of the sport’s most elite fighters. Benavidez, on the other hand, has also been on a tear through the division and showed he can compete with the best following his win over Plant. This might be the reason why even Hearn thinks this fight should be booked.

Hearn gives a timeline for when Canelo Alvarez vs Benavidez can take place

Later in the interview, Hearn touched down on when this fight could be booked. According to him, Alvarez will first need to face John Ryder and Dmitry Bivol this year before he can think about facing his fellow countryman. Moreover, he claimed that the fight will most probably take place next year, given Alvarez’s schedule.

“That’s a big fight, you know, Canelo against Benavidez. And after he’s taken care of his immediate business, which is John Ryder and Dimitri Bivol. I think the Benavidez fight is a definite fight for 2024. You know, I think Canelo still has lots of fights left in his career. Benavidez is getting better, hopefully, he keeps winning, and I think you’ll see that fight,” he said.
