However, Spence Jr. recovered, as he opted for surgery for the eye, as there were chances of him losing his left eye. Fortunately, there was plenty of time for recovery. Recently, Spence Jr. again had eye surgery.

In preparation for a rematch with Terence Crawford later this year, Errol Spence Jr. is taking proactive steps to address his eyesight concerns. The former unified welterweight champion recently underwent cataract surgery. This marked his second known eye procedure. He announced the news about the surgery on his Instagram story. Not only this, he even posted a video recently with a bandage wrapped up on his left eye. He wrote, “Had to get cataract surgery…It’s been past due. Sh*t was covering my eye.”

Then, he also added, “Why you think I got hit with so many jabs N hooks. Still a great performance by bro.” So, Errol Spence Jr. doesn’t think he was at his best while fighting ‘Bud’. So, for that reason, he underwent surgery before calling him out for the rematch. It’s to be noted that this is the same eye that forced him to pull out from the Manny Pacquiao fight. He was even banned from sparring, otherwise he’d have lost his eye at that time.

The first eye surgery of Errol Spence Jr

In a workout at Dallas’ World Class Boxing Gym, Errol Spence Jr. sensed something wrong with his left eye. He immediately called for a stop with a concerned “My eye, my eye.” Despite this, he resumed sparring two days later. However, he was warned to stop sparring if he didn’t want to lose his vision. During a scheduled checkup, a doctor described the condition as having ‘dark clouds’.

Adhering to advice, Spence consulted with Al Haymon, leading to a swift comprehensive eye exam on August 9. The diagnosis revealed a retinal detachment/break, forcing Spence to withdraw from his anticipated August 21 bout against Manny Pacquiao. This setback marked a significant turn for the ESPN No. 4 pound-for-pound boxer. After his successful surgery, he stated, “I’m grateful that I caught it…It’s a career-ending injury for a lot of other boxers.”
