Jim Ross Reveals Why Mike Tyson Was Never Considered to Wrestle in WWE

Mike Tyson made several appearances in the WWE. The unprecedented brawl on Raw with Steve Austin and knocking out Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV are some of the moments that just live on. With his admired resume in the sport of boxing, Mike Tyson was often pursued by the WWE. Since ‘Kid Dynamite’ made a handful of appearances, did the organization ever consider having Tyson as a wrestler on WWE?

In the latest episode of the Grilling JR podcast, commentator Jim Ross answered if Tyson ever had the plan to join the WWE. Ross, who labelled Tyson as a “bodyguard type of guy”, never saw in the latter a potential and regular wrestler for WWE. No, I thought he’d be a body guard type, one-punch knockout kind of a guy. And that’s all I needed to see until the right hand, and I’m good,” Ross told regarding ‘Iron’ Mike.

Ross went on to talk about Mike Tyson’s fresh appearances in All Elite Wrestling. Although Mike Tyson did not professionally wrestle in the WWE, he nonetheless developed a love for pro wrestling. Ross believes Tyson has studied the art of pro wrestling and subsequently loves it. Here is what Ross said speaking about Tyson’s appearances in All Elite Wrestling.

Jim Ross enjoyed the occasional appearances of Mike Tyson in All Elite Wrestling

In 2020, Mike Tyson made his AEW debut, confronting Chris Jericho with his entourage inside the ring. Since then, the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ made some occasional appearances inside the AEW ring. Speaking about these recent performances, Ross recounted the old times. “And he’s been back with his occasional appearances in AEW. I’ve always enjoyed it because we talk about the old times,” Ross commented by saying.

In the light of the same statement, Ross expressed how Tyson would have won “a lot of trivia contests from wrestling” had he participated in the 60s or 70s. “Mike, a lot of fans don’t realise Mike Tyson could win a lot of trivia contests from wrestling, in New York wrestling in the 60s and the 70s.
