Days of teasing are finally over! The Washington Wizards kept it simple and selected AJ Dybantsa with the No.1 pick despite the chatter surrounding draft night surprises. Now, with Dybantsa yet to spend a full day as the Wizards’ newest superstar, Trae Young has made his feelings clear.

Moments after the Wizards selected the BYU standout with the #1 pick on Tuesday night, Ice Trae took to his X handle to welcome the 19-year-old to Washington, signaling his belief in the franchise’s upcoming cornerstone.

“Welcome to DC @AJ_Dybantsa !! The story has been written. The City is Ready! We’ll talk about that # soon,” Trae Young posted.

Welcome to DC @AJ_Dybantsa !!
The story has been written The City is Ready!
We’ll talk about that # soon

— Trae Young (@TheTraeYoung) June 24, 2026

The veteran guard’s post went beyond a simple congratulatory message. By declaring that “the city is ready,” Young appeared to acknowledge Dybantsa’s arrival as the next major chapter in the franchise.

Trae Young’s message carried extra significance given the vision he has repeatedly addressed since he arrived in Washington. And now, signing a fresh long-term deal, 4 years $212 million, Young made it clear that he wants to make his statements turn into reality.

“We have had young guys that have been through a rebuilding stage now,” Young said earlier in Pivot Podcast. “They have went through a lot of losing these few years, and they’re tired of it.”

Above all, Young claimed to have just entered his prime and to be on track to reach the top of the Eastern Conference.

With Anthony Davis already in place and Dybantsa now joining the roster as the top pick, the pieces Young has been waiting for may finally be coming together.

Importantly, the powerful message also arrived with a playful twist, as Dybantsa and Young may have an immediate issue to settle first.

Weeks before the draft, appearing on Gil’s Arena, the rookie addressed his impending jersey number conflict with Young.

“If they draft me, I do need 3, Trae. If they draft me. We’re gonna see in like 5 weeks.”

The request, more like a demand, stemmed from Dybantsa’s long-standing association with #3, which he has worn for almost his entire journey. The only complication is that Young currently holds it.

With the 4x All-Star already giving up his #11 upon his arrival, Young appears to be ready to revisit that conversation. His playful response suggested the two might soon discuss the jersey.

Zooming out, it’s much bigger than the jersey number. For a franchise looking to build around a new generation of talent, Young’s message offered hope and also a glimpse into the future.

How will AJ Dybantsa fit with Trae Young and Anthony Davis?

AJ Dybantsa embraced the blinding lights on Tuesday but made it clear that it was only the beginning.

“Obviously, I have a lot of work to do, but a testament to all the hard work and all the discipline and sacrifice that I make,” he said to Lisa Salters.

His arrival comes at an interesting time for the Wizards. The NBA produced eight different champions over the last eight seasons. Now, the Wizards are attempting to accelerate their chances with a perfectly balanced roster.

Veteran superstars with a well-developed youth program.

On paper, the starting lineup looks like this.

PG – Trae Young

SG – Kyshawn George

SF – AJ Dybantsa

PF – Alex Sarr

C – Anthony Davis

It’s a blend of size, versatility, and scoring options across multiple positions. Moreover, beyond the offensive production, AJ also brings length and defensive strength. A 7-foot wingspan threat that would complement the already imposing front court.

NBA legend DeMarcus Cousins, analyzing the draft pick on Bleacher Report, highlighted the defensive potential within the Wizards’ roster. Building a defensive unit around Trae Young, who isn’t really known for his guarding skills, would give a huge cushion.

With AD protecting the paint, Sarr continuing his development, and AJ adding 6 ‘10 presence on the wing, the Wizards have an almost unbreakable defensive wall. It will protect the backcourt and allow Young to go the distance with his playmaking.

Now, the Wizards have the win-now highway. Let’s see how it pans out.

The Utah Jazz made a major splash in the 2026 NBA Draft by selecting explosive Kansas guard Darryn Peterson with the No. 2 overall pick. With the top-two spot predictions always swinging between AJ Dybantsa and Peterson, this move sparked the hype train among NBA veterans. After Kendrick Perkins, it’s DeMarcus Cousins setting the stage for huge expectations with a comparison only a few draft picks could earn. During Bleacher Report’s live draft broadcast, the former NBA All-Star gave a glowing review of the pick by comparing the young guard’s demeanor and play style to one of the greatest to ever step onto a basketball court.

Cousins explicitly stated that Peterson showcases elite flashes of the late Kobe Bryant, instantly boosting the hype surrounding Utah’s newest foundational piece.

“I can see the Kobe in his game,” Cousins raved during the broadcast. “I can see the self-confidence, I can see the isolation package. Everything that we love about Kobe, this kid shows flashes of.”

Cousins didn’t stop there, adding that the young guard is a “super, super talented kid, probably the most talented in the draft.”

— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) June 24, 2026

There’s no arguing there. Darryn Peterson was projected as a top 2 if not the first overall pick, edged out slightly by Dybantsa, who goes to the Wizards. Peterson could immediately be the answer to Utah’s offense, though Cousins did note there’s a developmental challenge ahead on the floor.

“I am concerned with the combination of him and Keyonte George,” Cousins admitted. “I want to see what that looks like with those two on the floor together; they both need the ball in their hands to be themselves. So that’s something to be figured out. I mean, undeniable talent.”

The Utah Jazz scored with a franchise cornerstone

Boogie is far from the only basketball analyst to place Peterson in the elite stratosphere of historic scorers. Ahead of the draft, former NBA player-turned-ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins made a similar prediction on the Road Trippin’ podcast.

“His floor is Bradley Beal. His ceiling skill-wise, like, his ability to be able to get buckets at all three levels is like Kobe Bryant. Yeah. And I say that sh*t, I say that respectfully. I say that respectfully. I’m not saying he’s gonna have a Kobe Bryant-type career. I’m talking about the talent level there.”

As it tends to happen with Perk, that phrasing went viral a day before the draft. As soon as Peterson went second, Boogie validated what Perk had said by comparing him to the Black Mamba, too.

Though Peterson’s own fanbase didn’t agree. After Perk’s viral statement, discussions sparked online, and most felt Darryn resembled a pre-championship Ray Allen.

Peterson’s scoring ability could become as lethal as the Bean’s – that former All-Star John Wall reminded Perk he isn’t the only one who thinks so. The 19-year-old spent his collegiate season showcasing exceptional offensive talent, averaging 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game while hitting 38.2% of his shots from beyond the arc.

He managed to be productive despite dealing with frequent cramping issues. He suffered a bad bout during boot camp and had to be taken to the hospital at that time. Ironically, that was one thing that Boogie didn’t like about him.

In the previous episode of Run it Back, Cousins accused Peterson of “sabotaging” Kansas for subbing himself out of games during his lone college season and missing 11 games.

However, the young player finally found that the cause of the cramps was an unsafe buildup of creatinine. Since stopping the supplements, he’s been cramp-free and likely won’t give Boogie a chance to claim he’s ‘sabotaging’ the Jazz, too.

Besides, with the Kobe Bryant-like talent, Cousins dismissed those concerns, noting that “with the talent, all that can be overlooked.”

Darryn Peterson’s upsides were simply too immense for the Jazz to pass up. Now paired with Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen, Peterson brings an elite isolation package to Salt Lake City.

Anthony Edwards has watched the Minnesota Timberwolves strip away key pieces of his championship puzzle for three straight summers. The front office first moved on from Karl Anthony Towns in 2024, despite his seamless fit alongside Ant. Then, in 2025, it let Nickeil Alexander-Walker walk. Now, Minnesota has shipped Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets. With every offseason bringing another major change, the franchise faces a question it can no longer ignore. How long can it keep asking its superstar to stay patient? Stephen A. Smith sent a direct warning to the front office on First Take.

“I don’t know how he [Edwards] can be all good. I’m not saying this move, this particular move, is something he should have a problem with,” ESPN’s veteran analyst said. “But I think the Minnesota Timberwolves better be careful because if they don’t make the right moves, Anthony Edwards may ask out of there.”

Smith added, “I think that’s something that they have to be mindful of because if you’re him, you certainly are. It’s hurting watching others get the shine that you know your talent deserves because the brother’s all world. Make no mistake, and he is box office. So it is a problem that Minnesota is going to have to fix now.”

The 58-year-old further argued that while Randle’s résumé speaks for itself, his recurring body-language issues and desire to be the top option have hurt his standing. Over the last four seasons, the 31-year-old has averaged 22.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. However, his playoff struggles have often overshadowed those achievements. In fact, Smith claimed that some of his teammates on the New York Knicks doubted whether the team could win with him.

“The Minnesota Timberwolves better be careful, because if they don’t make the right moves, Anthony Edwards may ask out of there.”@stephenasmith reacts to the Julius Randle trade pic.twitter.com/Inu7vUANUL

— First Take (@FirstTake) June 23, 2026

Therefore, “Minnesota was not hesitant to move beyond him, just like the Knicks were not hesitant to move beyond him,” Stephen A. added. “In the end, though, it comes down to Minnesota in this regard. You’ve got a superstar in Anthony Edwards. He is a superstar. Make no mistake about it.”

Since getting drafted No. 1 overall by the Timberwolves in 2020, Edwards has slowly but surely established himself as the main man on the Wolves. In 2025-26, he averaged 28.8 points per game, the third-highest mark in the league. And collectively, for a franchise that went to the playoffs just once in the previous 15 seasons, making regular postseason runs is a big improvement. But for how long can Edwards be satisfied with playing at a high level while falling short when it matters most?

In 2023, the Timberwolves lost in the first round and followed it up with two straight trips to the Western Conference Finals, only to lose to the Mavericks and the Thunder. In 2026, they were hoping to do better on that, only for them to be stopped by the Thunder once again, this time in the semi-finals.

Smith, who feels Edwards is not happy, asked: “What are you going to do to show Anthony Edwards that you can compete with San Antonio and you can compete with Oklahoma City?”

He wants to know where the upgrades will come from. The losses were gradual, but Towns (who went on to win a championship with the New York Knicks earlier this year), Alexander-Walker, and Randle have yet to be effectively replaced. Minnesota, however, believes it had other reasons for making those moves.

According to reports, the Wolves have paid $100 million in luxury tax over the last three years. That period has coincided with the franchise’s three best seasons in recent memory, including multiple playoff appearances. However, the front office is not focused on adding major new pieces. Instead, it is committing significant money to the players already on the roster, such as handing Ayo Dosunmu a $112 million contract after trading Randle.

Whether Minnesota’s moves ultimately pay off remains to be seen. But while the front office continues to reshape the roster around Edwards, the organization has also suffered another significant loss away from the court.

Anthony Edwards & Co. lose another piece to Portland

Following the Julius Randle trade, the Minnesota Timberwolves saw their lead assistant, Micah Nori, walk away. The Portland Trail Blazers have appointed the 52-year-old as the new head coach. Most importantly, Nori’s long wait finally paid off. After spending the last five seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the coach who entered the NBA benches in 2009 now gets his own team after 17 seasons as an assistant.

Along the way, Nori built experience with five franchises, including the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, and Timberwolves. Meanwhile, his reputation for connecting with players and communicating clearly helped separate him from Boston Celtics assistant Tyler Lashbrook and former Blazers interim coach Tiago Splitter in the race for the job.

“He is elite in what I call the small pieces of the game,” Wolves head coach Chris Finch told The Athletic. “Small, not that they are unimportant, but small in that they are often overlooked. He’s elite with lineup combinations. Elite with rotations. Elite with special situations, whether it’s [after timeouts], end of game, or just understanding how to maximize possessions.”

So now, the Wolves have lost two important figures in a single day: Julius Randle and Micah Nori. Whether those departures ultimately help or hurt the franchise remains to be seen, but they only add to the questions surrounding Minnesota’s direction as it looks to keep Edwards convinced that a championship can still be built around him.

For months, Miami chased the one name that always felt out of reach. On Monday, that dream finally became reality as Giannis Antetokounmpo left Milwaukee to form a terrifying partnership with Bam Adebayo, giving the Heat the star power they have desperately missed since Jimmy Butler’s 2025 exit. Suddenly, championship hopes feel real again. But as South Beach celebrates its biggest coup in years, one question hangs over the league. Is this the exact roster LeBron James has been searching for?

“I don’t see that LeBron impact after that man and took his cookies,” Shannon Sharpe said on the Nightcap. Meanwhile, NFL legend Chad Johnson, aka Ochocinco or Ocho. “I like that,” he said while Sharpe shared his take on the Giannis to Heat trade. “LeBron back to Miami with Bobby P and Giannis? Hold on. Let me text LeBron.”

Johnson then appeared ready to act on the idea himself, pulling out his phone as the conversation continued.

Chad ochocinco tells Shannon sharpe LeBron James needs to come to the Miami heat now with a team of Giannis Antetokounmpo and bam Adebayo https://t.co/Cg0zJDsNVo pic.twitter.com/axSSPn2iPa

The recruiting pitch naturally brought back memories of James’ first stint in Miami. Between 2010 and 2014, he won two NBA championships, two Finals MVP awards and made four consecutive Finals appearances while helping establish one of the league’s most dominant superteams.

The Big 3 made it to the Finals in their first season together, but fell short against Dirk Nowitzki’s Dallas Mavericks. But the next two seasons solidified their legacy in the franchise’s history. Meanwhile, LeBron James bagged two back-to-back NBA titles, two back-to-back MVPs, and two back-to-back Finals MVPs. But in 2014, as his mission to become a champion seemed done and dusted, LeBron went back to Cleveland.

Honestly, Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s presence in Miami makes the team enticing enough for the Los Angeles Lakers superstar. Moreover, the 41-year-old’s time as a free agent will start at the end of June, and he has yet to commit himself to LA for another season or two. However, James’ move to the Heat might be a long shot.

LeBron James to the Miami Heat cannot be ruled out

The Miami Heat have vacated a big chunk of their roster to facilitate Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis’ arrivals. Now, the question is, could the front office make another move for a bigger splash this offseason? According to Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the team could consider a reunion.

“The Heat could try to lure impending free agent LeBron James with its full midlevel exception, but a James return is considered a long shot,” Jackson reported. The reporter is viewing the idea as a major reach, and the numbers only add to the doubt.

LeBron, at 41, has averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game in the 2025-26 season. Now, if the Miami Heat truly acquire James, then the NBA could see the rise of yet another lethal trio. The Heat will have a Giannis–LeBron–Bam core. That would give Miami a massive front line built for versatility. With players capable of defending multiple positions while relying on complementary scorers and playmakers to provide spacing and offensive support.

With Andrew Wiggins likely heading out as a $30 million player option sits before him after the Giannis trade, a core of LeBron, Giannis, Bam Adebayo, Davion Mitchell, Norman Powell (that is, if the Heat keep him) and Bobby Portis could anchor a 9-man group built around endless switches from 2 to 5, size everywhere and an offense fueled by elite playmaking.

Honestly, LeBron James’ return to Miami seems too good to be true. Yet, in the current picture, you truly cannot rule out any of these possibilities. And that is simply because of how the trade market and team demands shift with time. So maybe the vision of a James-Antetokounmpo-Adebayo core doesn’t seem so bad.

Everyone’s been expecting a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade for a few days, but I think many were still surprised when the Miami Heat were the ones who got it done. It felt like the Boston Celtics were the frontrunners for Giannis’s talents, but the Heat came in with the better package, and now Giannis is heading to South Beach.

After every NBA blockbuster trade, I see tons of people on social media saying, “explain this to me in NFL terms.” So that’s exactly what I’m here to do. I went back through NFL history and found a few trades that are pretty comparable to the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade.

But first, we have to dissect this trade and figure out what we’re looking for in an NFL comp.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is Heading to South Beach

The Miami Heat were the 10-seed in the East last season with a 43-39 record and ended up losing in the first round of the play-in tournament. In fact, the Heat have been stuck in play-in purgatory for the last four years. They’re always good, but never seem to be good enough.

The Heat have, and always will, refuse to tank. If they’re not going to pick in the top-5 and get a superstar in the draft, they knew they’d have to make a move for one in a trade, and that’s exactly what they did on Monday.

Mar 4, 2026; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) looks on in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Hawks at Fiserv Forum.
But to see this trade go through, the Heat had to give up their future. They lost four young pieces in Tyler Herro, Kasparas Jakucionis, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kel’el Ware, plus three first-round picks. That’s seven players under the age of 26 heading out the door in exchange for a 31-year-old Bobby Portis and 31-year-old Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Heat basically traded their future for a chance to win a championship in the next 3-4 years. Have we seen an NFL trade like this before?

Packers Trade For Micah Parsons

It’s hard to compare NBA and NFL trades because superstars aren’t typically worth as much in the NFL. Take Myles Garrett, for example. He’s a top-three player in the entire league, and he went for two first-rounders and one young player. It doesn’t typically take four players and three picks to get a blockbuster done. But still, I think the Micah Parsons trade last offseason is a pretty similar case.

December 7, 2025: Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons 1 walks to the sidelines during warm ups before the game against the Chicago Bears in Green Bay, WI.
The Green Bay Packers entered the 2025 offseason coming off their second-straight season as the NFC’s 7-seed. Just like the Heat, they’d been good, but not great, for quite some time and were looking to make a move to get over the hump. So, they went out and made a move for one of the NFL’s best pass rushers, Micah Parsons, and in exchange, they gave up their next two first-round picks and DT Kenny Clark.

This obviously isn’t a perfect comparison, because Clark was 29 years old and they didn’t give up any younger talent, but in NFL terms, it’s pretty close. A middling team made a blockbuster trade for a bona fide superstar in hopes of getting over the hump. We’ll see if it works out for either of them.

Rams Trade For Matthew Stafford

After making it to the Super Bowl and losing embarrassingly in 2017, Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams failed to win more than 10 games in a single season over the next two years. McVay obviously believed in his roster, though, because he shipped Jared Goff and two first-round picks to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford.

Again, trades in the NFL are never as big as the NBA, but this one was pretty massive. The Rams gave up a 26-year-old, two-time Pro Bowl quarterback who was two years removed from a Super Bowl berth, plus two first-round picks, for a 32-year-old who had never even won a playoff game.

Everyone knew Stafford was great, but was he good enough to take a 10-win team to the Super Bowl? The answer to that question was yes. In his first year with the Rams, Stafford led them to a Super Bowl victory, and now he’s ready to try to bring them back in 2026.

Meanwhile, Jared Goff has become one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the entire NFL in Detroit, and the Lions used the two first round picks the Rams gave them to help them select players like Jameson Williams and Jahmyr Gibbs, who are both focal points of their potent offense.

The Rams took a big gamble here, just like the Heat are. If Stafford didn’t pan out, they would’ve looked like fools for making this trade. But he did, and now they’re Super Bowl champions. We’ll see if this works out for the Heat as well.

Broncos Trade For Russell Wilson

I think the best comparison for the Giannis trade is actually the Russell Wilson trade back in 2022. The Denver Broncos shipped off a core of young players, including Drew Lock and Noah Fant, plus two first round picks, two second-round picks, and a third-round pick in exchange for the former Super Bowl champion.

You don’t see trades of this magnitude in the NFL as often as you do in the NBA. This was a true blockbuster trade, and when you look at the package it took to get Wilson, it’s probably about as close as you’re going to get to the Giannis deal in the NFL.

For the Heat’s sake, they better hope their gamble works out better than Denver’s. Russell Wilson played two years with the Broncos, where he combined for 6,500+ yards, 42 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions while going 11-19 as a starter. He was released after his second year with the team, and Denver has gone on to find much more success with second-year quarterback Bo Nix under center.

The Giannis trade could go in two different directions for the Heat. Either they take Los Angeles’s route, and he takes over, and losing your young depth pieces doesn’t matter, and they go on to compete for championships. Or they take Denver’s route, and they crash and burn because they gave up far too much for him.

Hypothetical Trade Package

Since it’s so hard to find a direct NFL comp for the Giannis trade, I thought I’d also throw in a hypothetical one to show just how much the Heat gave up for Giannis.

Imagine the Atlanta Falcons, who just missed out on the playoffs last year and have a solid, young core of players, made a move for Joe Burrow, and “all” they had to do was give up Drake London, Matthew Bergeron, Divine Deablo, and Jalon Walker, plus three first-round picks to get him.

You’d probably think they’re crazy for giving up a star offensive player (Tyler Herro) and three above-average, young players, as well as three first-round picks for Burrow, even though he’s a top-five quarterback in the NFL, but that’s the kind of investment the Heat made into Giannis.

The NBA is a league where one player can carry you much further than in the NFL, so going all-in for a superstar isn’t always a bad idea, but this goes to show you just how much the Heat gave up to get Giannis.

It’s a gamble, but the Heat have made moves for superstars before (signing LeBron James), and it’s worked for them, so who am I or anyone else to say this was a bad trade?

The New York metropolitan area isn’t just welcoming back the Larry O’Brien Trophy after the New York Knicks ended their 53-year title drought earlier this month. It is also welcoming back a familiar face. In one of the offseason’s more unexpected moves, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded former Knicks star Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, bringing him back to New York. The deal left many scratching their heads, but if there’s anyone especially happy about it, it’s Kendra Randle, the forward’s wife.

Kendra shared a bunch of stories following the three-team trade revealed on Monday. Sharing one post welcoming Randle to the Nets family on Instagram, she wrote, “New York friends and family were backkkk omg,” with a bunch of crying and heart emojis.

What stole the show, however, was a throwback video dating back to when they previously lived in New York, when Randle was a member of the Knicks.

She even revived the viral video of their eldest child, Kyden, from 2021. Then just four years old, Kyden left Barclays Center in tears after the Nets edged his father’s former team, the Knicks, 114-112. In the clip, he pointed at a poster featuring James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Jeff Green and famously declared, “I hate those.”

Kendra commented under it, “True full circle moment, go nets!” She reshared it and wrote once again, “Full circle moment!”

It indeed was a full circle when a now older Kyden, sporting a cast on his hand, sent a message to the Nets fans. “Yo, it’s Ky, I’m so happy and so excited and so happy to be back in New York. let’s go Nets.”

It didn’t take long for the Randles to embrace Brooklyn after the trade. The move brings them back closer to home, and their allegiances appear to have shifted with it.

They’ll now be cheering for a franchise very different from the one Julius once represented. The Brooklyn Nets do not have the history, fan base, or trophy cabinet of their cross-town rivals. The fact that the city breathes Knicks basketball became apparent when millions took to the streets in celebration after the team defeated the Spurs 4-1 in the NBA Finals. To a newcomer, it might have seemed as though there wasn’t another NBA team in the city at all.

As a member of the Timberwolves, Randle may have been happy to see his former teammates lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Now, however, he finds himself on the other side of the rivalry as a Net. Kendra, meanwhile, seemed to sense the move was coming days before it became official.

Julius Randle’s wife got a sign about the trade

In another story, Kendra (who seemed absolutely elated about taking a one-way flight from Minneapolis to New York) wrote, “If you know me, you know I’m all about my signs… 3 days ago I wore this purse I hadn’t worn in forever, and I found this in the back of it from 2021”.

It was the picture of a purse she had recently pulled from her closet, showing a pristine, round “Visiting Team Postgame Pass” sticking out of the fabric. The pass, dated November 30, 2021 (not from the day Kyden’s viral video was filmed), was issued for a game at the Barclays Center against the Nets. The uncanny timing added to the emotions the family felt when they heard Julius Randle was traded to Brooklyn.

This marks a fascinating new chapter that brings Randle right back to where he established himself as an elite forward. Randle previously served as a key player in the Knicks’ rotation, earning three All-Star selections and leading the franchise out of an eight-year playoff drought in 2021. Unfortunately, Randle and the Knicks lost 4-1 to the Hawks in the first round. They then missed the playoffs in 2022 before returning the following year, only to bow out in the second round to the Miami Heat.

He was then traded to the Timberwolves in 2024 for Karl-Anthony Towns. Now, Minnesota is in the midst of a salary-shedding campaign, which brought Randle’s tenure in the Twin Cities to an end after an intense playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, who won in six games.

The Wolves orchestrated a major three-team deal with the Nets and the Chicago Bulls just hours before the Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster overshadowed it. Minnesota sent Randle and the No. 28 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft to Brooklyn, effectively shedding his $33.3 million contract.

By clearing roughly $36 million in total payroll, the Timberwolves created the necessary cap room to immediately re-sign Ayo Dosunmu. Meanwhile, the Nets sent cornerstone big man Nic Claxton to the Chicago Bulls to facilitate the deal.

Although it’s not the Knicks, the Randles are now just on the opposite side of the East River. Julius Randle steps into Brooklyn to provide a rebuilding Nets squad with proven veteran leadership, while his family happily reclaims its place in New York.

Pat Riley spent years hoping to repeat this – building two championship teams with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, then two more Finals runs with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. The pattern has always been the same in Miami: get the superstar first, figure the roster out after. Brian Windhorst asserted that the second part of that plan is about to be tested in ways the betting markets aren’t yet pricing in, despite the blockbuster acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo.

DraftKings reportedly now lists the Heat with the third-shortest odds to win the East next season, trailing only the Celtics and the reigning champion Knicks. Windhorst, on Tuesday, on ESPN’s Get Up, pushed back on the ranking.

“They don’t have a team yet,” he said, h/t Heat Central. “They’re gonna have to build out. You need shooting in this day and age. They don’t really have that.” His concern wasn’t about the star power Miami just acquired; instead, it was about everything still missing around it.

Brian Windhorst says Norman Powell will be GONE, unless he takes a massive pay cut:

“They’re gonna lose their All Star, Norman Powell. Unless he takes a crazy discount. He’s gonna be gone… Andy Ellisburg their GM, is superior at his job. Erik Spoelstra, their developmental… pic.twitter.com/fpzXi6I1nH

— Heat Central (@HeatCulture13) June 23, 2026

The trade itself was massive. The Bucks sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round selection. The deal leaves Antetokounmpo with a $58.5 million cap hit for 2026-27, with a $62.8 million player option for the following season, and that financial position is precisely what Windhorst identified as the next problem Miami has to solve.

Windhorst on specific roster gaps that remain. “They have to make sure Wiggins is in the fold,” he said. “Wiggins could now be plucked elsewhere, but I do think he’ll stay there. But they’re gonna lose their All-Star, Norm Powell. Norm Powell was their All-Star. Unless he takes a crazy discount, he’s gonna be gone. They have to replace him.”

With the trade sending Herro – Miami’s leading scorer and primary shot-creator – to Milwaukee in the deal, the Heat’s offensive engine outside of Antetokounmpo and Adebayo is largely unresolved heading into free agency. Replacing both Powell’s scoring and Herro’s shot creation, while also retaining Wiggins, is in their to-do list, and Miami’s draft-pick store is now considerably empty after they surrendered three first-rounders to get the deal done.

Powell enters the offseason as one of the most attractive veteran scorers available. Reports and projections suggest that he could command a contract of around three years and roughly $65 million. The Miami Heat holds his Bird Rights, which gives them a major advantage because they can exceed the salary cap to re-sign him. However, rival teams are monitoring the situation, particularly contenders that need perimeter scoring.

Why Windhorst Is Still Betting Long-Term on Miami

Despite the concerns, Windhorst wasn’t writing the Heat off – he just adjusted his timeline. “Andy Elisburg, their general manager, is superior at his job. Erik Spoelstra, their development staff. I’m betting on the Heat, just not in ’26-’27.” The Heat now pair Antetokounmpo with Adebayo to form what projects as one of the most formidable defensive frontcourts in the league. That’s the foundation Windhorst believed the Heat front office alongside its coaching staff can build around, just not instantly.

Credit: IMAGN

Antetokounmpo is reportedly expected to receive assurances that this isn’t a short-term arrangement. He will become eligible on Jan. 6, 2027, to sign a four-year, $275 million supermax extension if he opts out, or a three-year, $214 million deal if he opts in, meaning the Miami Heat has the runway to build the right roster around him over time.

Getting the two-time MVP was the easy part. The shooting, the depth, and the Norm Powell replacement are the harder problems – and according to him, those get solved, just not immediately.

Whenever a superstar changes teams, the spotlight follows him. That’s exactly what happened after Giannis Antetokounmpo’s blockbuster move to Miami. But while most of the attention landed on the two-time MVP, Magic Johnson believes the Heat may have landed another piece capable of changing their championship outlook.

Now, 16 years later, the Miami Heat is ready to embrace another possible title-winning core. With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis moving to South Beach from Milwaukee, league legend Magic Johnson has an important message for the fans.

“People are going to talk about Giannis Antetokounmpo, and they should because he and Nikola Jokić are the two best players in the league,” Johnson tweeted. “But don’t sleep on how important the Heat getting Bobby Portis is. Bobby’s ability to shoot from the 3-point line and his toughness, he will be a major part of the Heat success!”

On Monday, the highly anticipated trade finally happened. Portis and Antetokounmpo are going to Miami. In return, they are sending Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jacques Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the 2026 13th overall pick, three other future first-round picks, and a second-round pick to the Bucks. That surely is a huge gamble for the Heat, as they almost emptied their future talent pool for the Greek Freak. However, the only upside of this trade is Giannis and Bobby Portis.

People are going to talk about Giannis Antetokounmpo, and they should because he and Nikola Jokić are the two best players in the league, but don’t sleep on how important the Heat getting Bobby Portis is. Bobby’s ability to shoot from the 3-point line and his toughness, he will…

— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) June 23, 2026

Magic’s point goes beyond simple shooting numbers. Portis arrives in Miami as the exact type of frontcourt player Giannis Antetokounmpo has historically thrived alongside. During the 2025-26 season, Portis shot 45.6% from three on 4.4 attempts per game while converting 45.4% of his catch-and-shoot triples. Just as importantly, nearly all of his three-pointers came off passes rather than self-created looks, making him an ideal floor spacer next to a ball-dominant force like Giannis.

That’s why Johnson specifically highlighted Portis instead of Giannis. Defenses already know how to build a wall against Antetokounmpo’s downhill attacks. The challenge for opponents comes when those driving lanes stay open. Milwaukee spent years surrounding Giannis with shooters to maximize his rim pressure, and Portis was one of the most effective pieces of that formula. By bringing Portis to South Beach alongside Giannis, Miami acquired not just another forward but one of the spacing mechanisms that helped unlock the two-time MVP at his peak.

However, defensively, Giannis works on a different level. Across 13 seasons, he owns a 106.3 defensive rating, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks, 8.6 defensive boards, and 43.8 defensive win shares, backed by a +2.5 DBPM. His recent numbers include 0.7 blocks, 0.9 steals and 7.1 rebounds in 2025-26, after posting 1.2, 0.9 and 9.7 a year earlier. Meanwhile, Bobby Portis Jr. carries an 111.1 rating with 0.6 steals, 0.5 blocks, and 4.8 rebounds, while grabbing 23% of available misses despite slightly negative DBPM marks.

The fit becomes even more intriguing when Bam Adebayo enters the equation. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon recently noted, “Spoelstra now has the chance to do, in a much stronger version, what he has tried to achieve with Jimmy Butler over the past three years; on a basketball level, this is a very special fit.” With Adebayo continuing to expand his perimeter game and Portis providing proven floor spacing, Miami suddenly has multiple ways to keep the paint clear for Antetokounmpo’s relentless attacks.

Why Miami Believes Bobby Portis Is More Than A Throw-In

The cost of the deal was enormous. Miami parted with Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis and a significant collection of future draft capital to land Antetokounmpo and Portis. Yet the inclusion of Portis may prove just as important as the arrival of Giannis himself. Miami finished in the bottom third of the league in three-point attempt rate last season and often struggled to create clean half-court spacing. Portis directly addresses that weakness while also giving Erik Spoelstra another versatile frontcourt option.

“Miami Heat owner Micky Arison and his son, Heat CEO Nick Arison, pulled off a major major trade for superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Bucks. Put them right there with the World Champion New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference!” Magic Johnson also tweeted. He added, “And btw that Miami Heat front line with Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bobby Portis is going to be awesome and so much fun to watch play!”

That frontcourt combination is precisely what has analysts excited. Portis can function as a stretch-four alongside Adebayo and Antetokounmpo or slide into backup center minutes without sacrificing spacing. Throughout his coaching career, Spoelstra has successfully utilized floor-spacing big men such as Chris Bosh, Kelly Olynyk and Kevin Love. Portis now enters that lineage with the added benefit of already understanding how to complement Giannis on the floor.

The trade immediately changed how the league views Miami’s championship chances, but Magic Johnson’s warning may ultimately prove prophetic. Everyone will focus on Antetokounmpo, as they should. Yet if the Heat’s new era succeeds, it may be because Portis provides the spacing, toughness and lineup flexibility needed to make a Bam Adebayo-Giannis Antetokounmpo partnership function at its highest level.

The Boston Celtics fell short in their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the fallout from those negotiations may linger far longer than the trade talks themselves. Jaylen Brown was reportedly included in Boston’s firm offer to Milwaukee, reigniting questions about his long-term place alongside Jayson Tatum.

“Hopefully he’s feeling relieved, in my opinion,” Jefferson remarked on SportsCenter, breaking down the psychological impact on players. “You have to understand that this is part of the business. If Giannis comes up, there’s going to be a lot of all-star players that are going to be sweating. He was not the only one. And really, it is a compliment if you are a player of Jaylen Brown’s stature, and they’re talking about a two-time MVP. Could you be a little bit frustrated? But understand that your name was mentioned, not Jayson Tatum.”

Jefferson’s point was straightforward. Boston reportedly viewed Brown as the only realistic centerpiece capable of getting the Bucks to engage in serious Giannis negotiations. In his view, that placed Brown in the same superstar tier Milwaukee was seeking in return.

“You (Brown) most likely, in this present form, were the most valuable player that they could offer for Giannis. You had the highest value. They might not have been looking at Jayson Tatum. But if you’re Jaylen Brown, that’s a compliment. That is a compliment in these spaces where you and Giannis are in the same space, where they’re saying, ‘Hey, we want that player to build our franchise around.’ But you still feel, I won’t say a compliment, but it is more of a feeling of relief. If that’s where you want it to be, if you want it to be in Boston, if you want it to continue building.”

Whether Brown agrees with Jefferson’s interpretation is another matter. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Boston ultimately submitted a firm offer built around Brown and two first-round picks for Antetokounmpo, while Milwaukee pushed for additional assets, including top prospect Hugo Gonzalez.

The structure of those talks mirrored previous Celtics superstar pursuits. During both the Kevin Durant discussions in 2022 and the Giannis negotiations in 2026, Tatum remained off limits while Brown emerged as Boston’s primary trade centerpiece.

The Giannis pursuit was not the first time Brown’s name surfaced in blockbuster discussions. In 2022, the Celtics reportedly offered Brown, Derrick White and a first-round pick in negotiations with the Brooklyn Nets for Kevin Durant. Brown’s reaction at the time was a now-famous two-word response on social media: “Smh.”

Still, Boston ultimately kept Brown, and the eight-year veteran responded by helping deliver a championship and Finals MVP in 2024.

That history also weakens the idea that Brown’s inclusion automatically signals an impending departure. Despite the public fallout from the Durant discussions, Boston doubled down on Brown, eventually signing him to the richest contract in NBA history at the time.

Boston might still trade Jaylen Brown

Brown has previously acknowledged that his future in Boston was not always guaranteed. During a 2026 appearance on Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady’s podcast, Brown revealed he considered asking out following the Celtics’ 2019 playoff exit against Milwaukee.

McGrady ultimately talked him out of that decision. “I just felt like, in that moment, I had to be a voice of reason,” McGrady said. “What I was seeing is a duo and a team that was putting something together.”

Years later, after Boston’s first-round exit to Philadelphia in 2026, McGrady reignited discussion by claiming, “I think his frustration lies deeply within the organization and other things that we don’t really have the details to.”

Celtics president Brad Stevens publicly pushed back on that narrative.

“I talked to Jaylen Monday a little bit, just real quickly, and he was nothing but positive,” Stevens said. “He has not expressed those frustrations to me.”

Despite Jefferson’s optimism, trade speculation surrounding Brown is unlikely to disappear. During an appearance on Get Up, Windhorst openly speculated that if the Giannis deal fell through, Boston could eventually explore other Brown trade scenarios.

At the same time, much of the reporting around the Antetokounmpo pursuit suggested Brown’s availability was tied specifically to acquiring a generational talent. As Boston moves forward with Tatum and Brown still intact, the biggest question is whether the latest round of superstar trade talks becomes another footnote in their partnership or the beginning of something bigger.

After years of missing out on All-Stars and former MVPs, the Miami Heat finally landed their superstar in Giannis Antetokounmpo. Apart from multiple picks, they had to shed Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, and fan favorite Jaime Jaquez Jr. JJJ is coming off a massive bounce-back campaign where he finished second in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting. Understandably so, he was dejected by the news of the exit.

Twitter user Boness305 shared a gym video of the former Heat star appearing dejected with hands on his hips after learning of his trade with the caption, “Jaime Jaquez Jr live reaction to being traded to Milwaukee in the Giannis deal”. In the 21-second clip, a fan/friend of his approached JJJ, showing the team, probably Shams Charania’s tweet, as he broke the news of the trade. Thus, the forward looked down and turned away, and apparently uttered, “Damn bro, s—.”

The video is pretty recent. Furthermore, other fans have uploaded pictures and videos alongside the former Heat star, who was practicing hoops at LA FIT. For weeks, the Heat were favorites to land the two-time MVP. And in every reported deal, Jaquez was the centerpiece. While the 25-year-old may have expected the trade, the reality is, he was still surprised, having to adapt to a new place.

Drafted 18th overall out of UCLA in 2023, Jaquez had spent his entire three-year career building a strong home base in Miami. He played in 75 games (most on the team), started 20, averaged 11.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG, shot nearly 49% from the field, earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors, finished 4th in Rookie of the Year voting, and won Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month twice. Since then, he has been on the rise.

The forward developed into an elite rotational piece and finished second in the 2025–26 NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting. He served as the primary engine for Miami’s second unit, posting career highs across nearly every statistical category.

Now, Jaquez will slide into a consistent role on the wings for a rebuilding Bucks squad heading into the 2026 NBA Draft.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s addition not enough for Heat

Miami traded away four stars but got the Greek Freak and Bobby Portis in return. Now, their starting five will be different: Davion Mitchell, Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo. But here is an additional problem: both Powell and Wiggins need to return next season. Wiggins has a $30.1 million player option, and Powell is an unrestricted free agent this summer who is expected to seek a contract upwards of $20 million per year.

That’s why former NBA champion turned analyst Richard Jefferson stated that the Heat’s work is still far from over. “I feel like they’ve given up so much. They did get a lot, but now, just because you have a talented player, you have to structure the team,” Jefferson stated. “You now have to build an elite team around Giannis, and you’ve given away a ton of assets.”

The Heat now have $18.1 million in first apron space to fill 4 roster spots. They can create more space by trading Nikola Jovic or, if Andrew Wiggins opts out. But they would prefer to at least bring Wiggins back or re-sign Norman Powell, and they can’t afford to lose them both in the offseason, especially after signing Giannis Antetokounmpo.
