Sacramento Kings displayed hints of being an elite force in the ‘22-’23 playoffs. Not only did they secure a third spot in the tight Western Conference, but they also had their first playoff appearance since the ‘05-’06 season. They returned with home-court advantage and gave the former champions a run for their money. The first-round matchup of the California teams was as entertaining a series as any. Sactown humbled the dynasty of the Golden State Warriors in a series of 7 – a sight rarer than a leap year.

Unfortunately, they could not come out on top in their first playoff series in nearly two decades. Partly to blame was a former Warriors player, who had the chance to win the 4th game at the buzzer.

Seeking Redemption from the Golden State Warriors

The end of Sacramento’s fourth playoff game was a nail-biter. Up 2-1 in the series, the Kings could’ve taken a commanding 3-1 lead if not for a missed shot by their starting forward.

The Warriors led 126-125, Fox picked up his dribble and passed to Barnes out of a trap from Curry and Green. Barnes on the strong-side wing finally had his moment, as he was wide open. He leaped into his jumper without hesitation. However, a long contest from Curry and Barnes’ struggles from the arc (1-5) resulted in the Black Falcon smoking the game-winner.

Barnes won the 2015 NBA Championship with Golden State. This season, he was just a shot away from ending the dynasty that he started his career on. Now, looking forward, the Kings are looking to build on their form.

Recreating or Renovating the Winning Formula?

Despite handing a near upset to the former champs, unfortunately, the Kings have to try again next year. While De’Aaron Fox, Sabonis, and Monk were the primary stars, Barnes fulfilled his role adequately. He averaged 15.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and a career-high 4.8 assists per game in the ‘23 season. However, for the Kings, expectations will be higher now that Sacramento fans have had a taste of 21st-century playoff basketball.

Since the off-season commenced, there have been several rumors about HB’s future. From serious interest from the Pistons to a probable trade for Kuzma. Until today, when Adrian Wojnarowski put all reports to bed.

Barnes has agreed to a 3-year $54-million contract with the Kings on Thursday. Additionally, Barnes has a 10% trade kicker – entitling him to a portion of his salary as a bonus in case of a trade. Sacramento showcases its seriousness by including the Black Falcon in its core lineup. He was one of three players to play all 82 games this season.

The Kings are obviously ambitious. They have a great bunch of veterans and young studs. And it seems they intend to keep that core together. With continuity, comes chemistry. And with chemistry can come championships.

It is evident that the Kings are keen on maintaining the chemistry of the same squad. However, considering their crunch time record, an extra wing upgrade or two could strengthen their chances. What do you think?
