Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes always underplayed their performance during the time when they dominated the Turbo-Hybrid era. They’d be like ‘The competitors look strong around here’ and they absolutely leave them in the dust on Saturdays and Sundays. As Red Bull is now dominating as Mercedes did, Sergio Perez might’ve taken up Lewis Hamilton’s role in underplaying the performance and running an air of Pessimism. However, it very well can be realistic as it’s Monaco that we’re talking about.

Red Bull has built a rocketship in RB19 for the 2023 championship. All 5 race wins have gone to Red Bull with Max Verstappen winning 3 and Sergio Perez winning 2. Checo is known as the king of street circuits and showcased that prowess in Jeddah and Baku. Whilst Monaco is also a street circuit, it’s nothing like any other track on the calendar. It’s all about building confidence lap after lap while trying to stay away from the walls.

During Thursday’s Press conference with the drivers, Checo opened up about his thoughts on who can challenge for the Monaco win. As Monaco has multiple slow-speed corners and very short straight, Checo suggested that the track will not be that great for the team and that they might struggle a little. He also expects Fernando Alonso and the Ferrari to be strong around the track owing to their better performance around slow-speed corners.

According to SoyMotor.com, Sergio Perez during the Thursday driver’s press conference said, “We know that it will not be a great circuit for us, we will suffer a little. The key will be to heat the tires properly, but in Monaco, anything can happen. Alonso and the Ferraris will be strong, as they were in Baku. Monaco is one of those places where if you make a mistake you end up on the wall. Sunday can be boring for the fans, not for us. We all enjoy Saturday, which is what counts.”

Checo then explained how one mistake can cost someone a race and create chaos, meaning anything can happen. Fernando Alonso saw eye to eye with Sergio Perez as he talked about his chances of winning the Monaco GP

Fernando Alonso was quick to recognize the pace of its competitors and suggested that things would not change much around the Monaco circuit. However, he did explain how Ferrari will be as great in Monaco as they were in Baku. However, Fernando did not wave off his chances of winning as he suggested that it is a one-off track and thinks that he can win the race.

During the Thursday Drivers press conference, Fernando Alonso said, “I don’t think that it’s going to be a huge change compared to Baku, which is [also] a street circuit, and Miami too. Ferrari was outstanding in Baku, we could see another great weekend for them here. But then, if I tell you that I didn’t come here thinking that I can win the race, I would lie to you. Because this is a one-off opportunity.”
