Horner Insinuates Mercedes Are Blocking Albon’s Move to Williams F1

This year has seen little to no surprises in the drivers’ market, with most drivers signing contract extensions with their current teams. But with Kimi Raikkonen’s retirement announcement, the silly season is officially underway. It looks like Alfa Romeo and Williams are the teams that will have seats to fill for the next season. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has mentioned that he is trying hard to secure the Williams seat for Alex Albon.

Mercedes may block Williams’ seat for Albon: Christian Horner

Albon failed to get a seat for the 2021 season as Sergio Perez replaced him in the Red Bull. However, his old team boss, Horner, is trying very hard to get him the potentially vacant seat at Williams. The current incumbent George Russell is almost set to move to Mercedes for the next season and Horner is hoping that Albon might grab the seat for himself.
But he recently mentioned that Mercedes may try to block Alex’s chances to get the Williams seat for themselves.

When asked why he thinks Mercedes will block Albon, Horner replied,” Because of his linkage to Red Bull. So, that would be a great shame. Hopefully, it won’t come to play. We hope to see him [Albon] racing next year.”

Alex deserves a seat in Formula One
Christian Horner, in the buildup to the Dutch Grand Prix, mentioned that the Thai driver deserves to be in the sport. Despite being dropped from Red Bull, Albon has been influential in doing the sim work for the team this season.

“I think Alex deserves a seat in Formula One and I think there’s quite a bit of interest in him for next year,” said Horner.
“We’ll do whatever we can to try to enable that. I hope that nothing prevents him from realizing one of those opportunities. Williams and Alfa Romeo have both expressed interest and we’re keen to see him back racing in Formula One.” mentioned the Red Bull team principal.

Albon might face some competition from Mercedes backed Nyck de Vries and Nico Hulkenberg. De Vries may pose a tough competition to the Thai driver because of his affiliation with the German team.
