As the excitement grows for the incoming race, the Ferrari boss gives his take on the performances showcased by the F1 rivals in comparison to his own home team. Mattia Binotto had extremely honest remarks about the Sprint race and he didn’t hesitate to share them in an interview with Sky.

Mattia Binotto reflecting on Mercedes’ George Russell’s precedence over the Spaniard, Carlos Sainz. He acknowledged Mercedes’ substantial growth this season as well.

He said, “We have seen a very strong Mercedes both on pace and in degradation.” Further adding, he explained that Ferrari had made a conscious decision of not making any further upgrades, whilst the other team, like the Silver Arrows, had kept up with their upgrades for both the previous races.

He said, “For this reason, it is not surprising that they have improved and that they are fast. However, this makes it clear that next year will not be a battle between two teams.”

Observing the Red Bull race strategy, the Italian questioned the team’s way. He stated that he was surprised at the firm choice of not swapping positions. He said that he failed to understand the logic behind their strategy of not letting Sergio Perez overtake Max Verstappen, which would’ve resulted in benefiting the team.

He said, “I am very surprised that at Red Bull they have not swapped positions. It seemed to me a very simple and trivial thing to do but which they did not do. Maybe they too sometimes have difficulty in making themselves heard by the riders.” [Translated by Google]

Binotto admitted to the challenges that Ferrari faced during the sprint race. He also accepted the poor judgment the team showed in regard to the tire choices at Friday’s qualifying.

On their wrong choice of tires, he said, “I am more focused on understanding what led us to make that choice. If it had started raining a minute earlier it would have been the correct decision, but seeing that we were the only ones on the intermediate must make us reflect also to understand how to behave in the future and find ourselves in better conditions.”
