The sport of Formula 1 has seen a few polarizing figures in the past. But none have garnered so much controversy as ex-Race Director, Michael Masi. The Australian took over from the late Charlie Whiting in 2019. However, his stint with the sport was a short one. After the events of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which saw Lewis Hamilton lose his undisputed crown to Max Verstappen, the 44-year-old was swiftly relieved of his duties citing “human error” on part of Masi.

Ever since, he’s not frequented the F1 paddock but has kept himself still in touch with the world of motorsport. Naturally, his unannounced arrival in the paddock wouldn’t even be welcomed. That being said, he did make an appearance at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, and he was in the paddock for the entire weekend. But given the events of that fateful night in Abu Dhabi, it would appear that there’s no love lost between Mercedes and the Australian.

According to Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz, “Michael Masi, the ex-FIA race director, has been in the paddock for the first time since that fateful day in December 2021.” However, while he’s been socializing with a bunch of paddock regulars, he’s chosen to take a stand against the Silver Arrows.

“And he’s been saying hello to drivers, [but] he hasn’t been saying hello to Mercedes people. I don’t really… Well, I do want to get into it, you know I do. But I won’t,” revealed Kravitz while talking about Masi’s attitude towards the Mercedes boys and girls.

There’s a lot of visible acrimonies now, but back when it all happened, Masi had indeed tried to lend the voice of reason.

For Hamilton, it’s an obvious case of feeling robbed. No matter what is said, the 7x champion will always rue the decision made by Masi. But back in 2021, when the wounds were fresh, Masi did try to initiate peace talks.

“They have their perspective and are entitled to their view. I respect any view, and it’s not for me to comment on what they do or don’t think. And if I am approached to have a discussion I am open to it, and always have been,” revealed Masi to the Daily Mail.
