Lewis Hamilton Explains Muted Celebration After Mercedes F1 Contract Confirmation

Lewis Hamilton suffered through Coronavirus during the 2020 F1 season. extended his contract. As seen through his social media posts, the road to recovery was a difficult one. He extended his partnership with Mercedes for a year. However, the Mercedes driver explained that he was not comfortable celebrating it on social media.
Speaking at the Mercedes W12 launch yesterday, Hamilton explained that he felt uncomfortable celebrating the new contract while the world is still dealing with the pandemic. The Briton was also focusing on recovering and preparing for the 2021 season.
“I continue to be conscious of what’s happening in the world and [so] posting pictures and celebrating things such as a contract being signed is kind of not really important to me.”

“That’s not really a message that I want to be sending out to people who are losing families, who are losing relatives still, who are struggling in a pandemic. That’s just not where I’m at. So I just kind of kept to myself,” shared Hamilton.

The Briton is one of the six drivers who have contracted COVID-19 over the last year. He contracted the virus after the Bahrain GP and missed the following race at Sakhir GP before coming back to Abu Dhabi.
He had not completely recovered from the virus when he returned to F1, and thus, post the season, that became his priority.

“I was focussed on my recovery, because it wasn’t a quick situation, and getting myself back to full strength. And getting the deal done and working on some personal relationships that I have,” explained Hamilton.
At the moment, it is not clear how people long are people immune to re-infection. Keeping this in mind, Hamilton has assured that he and his team will be taking vital precautions, just as they did last season.
