Formula 1 is a sport where things can change rapidly. As we have seen the sport develop so much over the years, we can see that, at its core, things like driver transfers, retirement, etc. can take shape overnight. Now, Lewis Hamilton has made us realize this once again through his contradictory statements.

Back in 2021, when Hamilton was on top of the world, he felt he couldn’t go on forever. However, now that he knows that an 8th World Championship may be slipping away from him, he is determined to work as hard and as long as it takes to accomplish that feat.

In 2021, while speaking to AS.com, the 7-time World Champion had this to say when asked if he could go as long as Raikkonen, who was 41 at the time.

He said, “I think not. (Contract ends at the end of the year). I don’t think I’m going to ride forever, even though this has been the biggest trip of my life.” (quotes translated using Google)

However, in a recent interview, he had something completely different to say. “I love what I’m doing – and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon but I’m very… my goal was always to be with Mercedes, y’know, I signed with them in 1997.”.

He summed it all up by proclaiming, “I think I’ll always be with Mercedes ’til the day I die.”.

Not everyone who knows the 7-time World Champion believes him, though. One Formula 1 insider feels that if Mercedes remains in the slump that they have been in 2022, then Hamilton may consider calling it quits on his illustrious F1 career.

Lewis Hamilton has been the one to beat ever since he stepped foot into the Formula 1 paddock. His status as a legend of this sport was solidified as soon as he won his 1st championship for Mercedes in 2014. However, former F1 driver Martin Brundle feels that Mercedes will also be the doom of Hamilton’s F1 career.

Ahead of the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, he said, “As long as he’s still enjoying the bits around F1 or he can tolerate those bits around F1 and balance it out with just loving driving the car, [he’ll stay].”

He went on to say, “[But] if he goes through the whole year and Mercedes are third fastest and others are catching them up, then I suspect he’ll take a different view and my enjoyment analogy will play out in that he won’t be enjoying it anymore.”
