Ever since the turbo-hybrid era of the sport kicked in, Mercedes were always at the forefront. Needless to say, they did in fact dominate F1 from 2014 onwards and through to 2021. However, with the advent of the newest era of F1 cars, thanks to the 2022 regulation overhaul, the changing of the guard commenced. Out of the ashes of F1’s previous iteration of cars, came Red Bull, emerging supremely victorious. And the way Max Verstappen dominated 2022, many believe this reign to be far more dominant and superior to that of the Silver Arrows and Lewis Hamilton.

But is that the case? Haas boss, Guenther Steiner supposes that we must take things into perspective. Undoubtedly, the Bulls have done an amazing job to dethrone Mercedes. But have they crushed the Silver Arrows into oblivion? Steiner doesn’t think so.

Guenther Steiner belittles Red Bull’s prowess

The RB19 is quick, no doubt. But many believe it to be driven by Verstappen’s supernatural driving talent. The Italian engineer at the helm of the American F1 team appears to be from this very exact school of thinking.

During a recent episode of ESPN’s Unlapped F1 podcast, he said, “I think they did a good job. I wouldn’t call it “dominate”. They are very strong but I also think part of it is Max [Verstappen]. You have to give credit to him as well because he is doing a fantastic job. He’s just on top of the wave,” while talking about Red Bull’s supposed dominance.

For Steiner however, nothing can ever beat what Mercedes have achieved in this sport. “But I’m going back. Like, we had domination for seven years from Mercedes. You know, we didn’t get bored of it. Obviously, everyone complained. But we need to be fair.”

While Red Bull may not be as potent as the combination of Hamilton and Mercedes, their reign at the top of F1 will still have good longevity.

Bleak Red Bull & Max Verstappen future predicted for Lewis Hamilton & F1

The single biggest reason why the 2021 season will go down as one of the greatest F1 seasons ever is because of the two-way title fight that ensued. However, as things stand, it appears that Verstappen will claim the top step of the podium consistently for quite some years to come.

Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz believes, “that part of the reason why they changed the rules was to stop Mercedes dominance. That worked. Formula 1 and the FIA’s stated aim was to improve the racing. It did do that to a large degree. But 2021, old rules, the championship is decided on the last lap. 2022 it is decided in Japan with four races to go so it didn’t exactly close up the field.”

“It meant that Red Bull got it right so much, that they are now favorites going in. That dominance I think will probably run until the next rule change in 2026.”
