Max Verstappen, known for his no-nonsense approach, is under the spotlight yet again. This time, he has directed his discerning eye toward Hollywood’s upcoming F1 movie, Apex, produced by the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman has made headlines for his candid opinions on Netflix’s F1 documentary series, and now he’s turned his attention to the silver screen. In a move reminiscent of his critique of over-dramatization in Drive to Survive, Max Verstappen seems uninterested in the cinematic portrayal of his beloved sport.

The Hollywood F1 project, Apex, features Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt in the lead role, with Mercedes star driver Lewis Hamilton donning the producer’s hat. Despite playing a part in the film alongside his F1 colleagues, Verstappen’s reservations echo his disdain for manufactured rivalries and over-dramatization, elements he believes take away from the authenticity of Formula 1.

This isn’t the first time the Red Bull driver has distanced himself from a cinematic portrayal of Formula 1. Max Verstappen had previously expressed discontent with his own portrayal in the earlier seasons of Drive to Survive. He revealed frustration about how the show depicted him when he was relatively new to the sport, creating a skewed perception among viewers.

In a sport where milliseconds can make or break a race, Verstappen’s insistence on authenticity resonates with fans who share his passion for the purity of Formula 1. Expressing his initial impressions of the movie clips shown during the Drivers Meeting in Austin, the 26-year-old appreciated the visual aspect but asserted a lack of personal interest in watching a film about Formula 1.

Nice to see, of course. But actually, it doesn’t interest me that much, Verstappen casually remarked, as quoted by Formule1.nl, expressing his limited interest in a film about his own sport. He added, “I don’t need to see a film of my own sport. This film is, of course, a made-up story, and everything is always over-dramatized. You have to love that.” [Translated by Google]

Although Max Verstappen might not be interested in watching a Hollywood portrayal of Formula 1, the movie itself has been making waves in the F1 community.

Here’s everything you need to know about Lewis Hamilton’s F1 movie Apex

Co-produced by Apple Studios and Lewis Hamilton’s Dawn Apollo Films, the production commenced at the British Grand Prix and continued its shoot in the Abu Dhabi finale, capturing on-track shots and pit wall scenes.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Brad Pitt revealed the plot. The film centers around his character, Sonny Hayes, a retired F1 racer returning to join APXGP after a massive ’90s crash, and Damson Idris portrays young driver Joshua Pierce. The film introduces a fictional eleventh team on the F1 grid, APXGP, with Pitt and Idris driving modified F2 cars, not real F1 cars, with sponsors like Tommy Hilfiger, MSC Cruises, and AMG Mercedes.

Director Joseph Kosinski, renowned for his CGI expertise, leads the film, with Hamilton praising Kosinski’s past work with fighter jets, anticipating a seamless translation of that skill to the world of F1. Renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer and a team of producers, including Hamilton and Pitt, have contributed to the film’s production.

However, the production faced a hurdle with a strike that lasted more than 100 days, potentially hindering its completion. Filming, initially expected at every F1 round in 2023, starting at Silverstone, will spill over into 2024 due to the delays. The challenges of continuity arising from new liveries and sponsors remain unconfirmed, raising questions about the movie’s ability to capture the evolving world of Formula 1.
