The 2022 PGA Championship is ongoing at the Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Within a day, the event will get its winner, and he will be awarded the glorious Wanamaker Trophy, along with the prize money. While the golf world considers the Trophy divine, a 4-time major winner doesn’t share the same thought. 

According to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports, ESPN held a feature program where they asked around golfers which weighed more, the Stanley Cup or Wanamaker Trophy. 

The Tour pros Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy chose the Stanley Cup to weigh more. Meanwhile, Padraig Harrington and Brooks Koepka chose the other. Mostly, all of them answered in the same way, by naming the name of the trophies; everyone but Koepka. 

However, what makes Koepka’s answer different is the way he answered it. “When the Wanamaker is filled with alcohol, it weighs a lot,” the golfer answered when ESPN interviewed him for the feature. 

Donated in 1892, the Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy competed for by professionals in North America. Later, in 1926, the cup became the ultimate prize of the NHL championship. According to the Hockey Hall of Fame, the trophy stands at 35 ¼ inches and weighs 34 ½ pounds as of now.

The Wanamaker Trophy also has a legendary history. Rodman Wanamaker, a sportsman and an heir to a department store empire, ordered the silver cup with his money back in 1916.

Notably, it was used as the prize of the only tournament of golf conducted by the PGA of America. The organization was formed in the same years as the Trophy. According to Golf Monthly, the Wanamaker Trophy stands at 28 inches high and weighs 27 pounds. 

Brooks Koepka – history with the PGA Championship

Turned pro in 2012, Koepka won his first PGA Championship, his second major overall, in 2018. Interestingly, the event was his 100th start on the PGA Tour. He won the tournament with a 2-shot lead against Tiger Woods. 

The golfer went on to win his second PGA Championship in 2019 by thus defending his title. With his victory, Koepka created a lot of records, including being the only player to win back-to-back PGA Championships and U. S. Opens.

Meanwhile, this year, Koepka is nowhere near the leaders of the competition after two rounds. The golfer made the cut and advanced to the final rounds with a score of 142.
