Only a couple of days ago, the PGA Tour released a strong statement against LIV Golf. With most of the season concluded and players preparing for the 2026 season, they made a critical announcement for everyone for next season. They said any player who participates in the LIV Golf Promotions Event from Jan 8-11 will face disciplinary actions and/or a suspension if they are associated with the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, or Champions Tour. The DP World Tour, as per the latest report, won’t follow the same route.

In a statement released by Josh Lees from Bunkered, they confirmed that both the DP World Tour & the HotelPlanner Tour don’t have any events scheduled in the week of the LIV Golf Promotions Event, which will be played from January 8-11, 2026. Hence, the players from Europe are free to participate in the tournament, as long as they are not aligned with the PGA Tour. That would be music to the ears of Scott O’Neil, who recently changed the format to 72-holes to try and convince OWGR to sanction the LIV Golf events.
With the minimum qualifying players from the Promotions Event increased to two, this will present as a great opportunity for anyone participating in the tournament. Moreover, even those who make it into the top 10 without getting a LIV Golf contract will be able to gain access to the International Series. Even if they don’t make it to either of the competitions, they will still be able to continue their pursuit on the DP World Tour in the following weeks. This alliance comes after years of turbulence.

In 2022, the DP World Tour fined players £100,000 and suspended them from upcoming events after they joined the inaugural LIV event without a release. Then, in May 2023, the DPWT sanctioned 26 players individually for breaching its “Conflicting Tournament Regulation.” An independent panel ruled n favor of the Tour, calling the sanction “reasonable and proportionate.” Some players also faced suspensions and loss of membership, as the DPWT won a legal battle in April 2023 affirming its right to impose such penalties. Just last year, LIV Golf met with DP World Tour officials, and reportedly offered a £6 million settlement fee to contribute to purses on the DP World Tour and to ensure that future LIV Golf tournaments would not clash with DP World Tour events. The talk went smoothly, clearly!
Having said that, what if a European player does manage to attain a LIV Golf contract?

What will the DP World Tour players do if they get a LIV Golf contract in the Promotions Event?
Over the last few years, the DP World Tour schedule has always clashed with the LIV Golf Promotions Event. That has created complications between the Tours and limited the opportunities for the players. In 2023, the pros were warned not to opt to play the Promotions event over the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. In 2024, the same issue arose as the tournament clashed with the DP World Tour’s Mauritius Open. However, that has not been the case as Scott O’Neil has ensured to host the event in a week when the DP World Tour is not playing a tournament.

Should a European Tour player make it to the top two and earn a LIV Golf contract, they will be allowed to represent the Saudi-based league. Stars are allowed to represent both Tours. And since they are not bound by a contract, like the PGA Tour players are, all they need to do is play the minimum required events for both leagues. That should help them fulfil the requirements to retain their membership in the DP World Tour & LIV Golf. And with Scott O’Neil pursuing OWGR status for his league, LIV Golf will become a far more appealing prospect for many European stars than it used to be in the last four seasons.
