As nail-biting as the duel was between McIlroy and MacIntyre, it wasn’t anything that the Irishman hadn’t endured before. During the final round press conference at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, the 34-year-old shed light on a cutthroat experience from nearly a decade ago.

Rory McIlroy throws light on the moment that shaped his win at the 2023 Scottish Open

For a good part of Sunday at the Scottish Open, it looked like home-grown golfer Robert MacIntyre would run away with the trophy. He had surged up the leaderboard in the last round, and a stunning birdie on the 18th saw him set a daunting target of 14 under.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, was one shot behind MacIntyre with two holes remaining. Under the testing weather conditions at the venue, he then birdied the par-3 17th to tie for the lead. McIlroy eventually holed from 10 feet on the 18th fairway to nab the 37th win of his professional career.

So, how did McIlroy hold his nerve long enough to emerge as the the winner? “Yeah, for whatever reason, walking on to the 17th tee, the 2013 Australian Open popped into my head. I was one behind Adam Scott with two holes to play,” the golfer told reporters. “I held a great putt on 17 for par to stay one behind playing the last, and then he made a bogey and I made a birdie, and I was able to clip him by a shot.

It was an extremely gratifying memory for the 4-time major winner, who has been playing golf professionally for over 15 years now. “All those memories and those experiences, they stand by you, and that just give me a good feeling going into those last couple holes to try to do something special,” he confessed.

Ahead of the final round, McIlroy held the 56-hole lead. On Sunday, he fumbled a bit, hitting back-to-back bogeys at the end of the front nine. But the much-decorated PGA Tour pro turned things around by playing the tough back nine in 31 and capped things off with two beautiful birdies. He finished the tournament with a total of 15-under 265 for a one-shot triumph over Robert MacIntyre. His first-ever win in Scotland also came with an incredible $1.575 million in the winner’s payout, the biggest chunk of the $9 million purse!
