Are the men’s majors showcasing golf skills or a new line of ‘what not to wear on the greens’? The stormy discussions began with Cam Smith, who arrived at the iconic Augusta National wearing a navy blue sports coat. But fans soon noticed the sports coat featured a tiny Greyson Clothiers logo, highlighting Smith’s partnership with the brand. A “major” marketing ploy? Likely. That should have marked the end of questionable golf attire, but another LIV golfer at another major, the PGA Championship, has decided to outdo the trendsetter in more ways than one, and fans are in an uproar.

Sergio Garcia, active at Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship’s opening round, instead of his scores making the noise (+3 till hole 14), it’s his outfit that set everything (and everyone) on fire. You see, the Spaniard sported black and red athletic wear. In addition, he wore red and white shoes and a red snapback cap. But what stands out the most? It’s Sergio Garcia’s bold declaration of his association with LIV Golf during the PGA Championship: the Fireballs GC logo, of which Garcia serves as captain, proudly adorns his attire.

However, this isn’t the first time Garcia has boldly announced his association with LIV Golf during a major. It’s a usual thing for him! During the Masters, Garcia wore mustard yellow and ketchup red for Day 1 at Augusta National. He proudly displayed the colors of LIV Golf’s Fireballs Golf Club, all while looking like Ronald McDonald. Fans online made fun, saying this like “When you’re playing 18 after lunch but making McFlurries after dinner,” or “He is a clown, so there’s that…” Just as they have now.
Sergio Garcia’s outfit at the PGA Championship attracts giggles
Is the PGA Championship turning into a fashion faux pas, or are we simply witnessing the latest trends in ‘par-tee’ attire? Fans certainly seem to think so. James Colgan, a writer at Golf.com, couldn’t resist sharing a picture of Garcia alongside Aladdin’s character Jafar, quipping, “Why is Sergio Garcia currently dressed as Jafar?” For those who might have missed the Aladdin fun, Jafar is known for his dramatic, dark attire, often featuring rich colors like deep reds and blacks, along with a distinctive headpiece. Colgan’s comment playfully highlights how Garcia’s outfit mirrors Jafar’s theatrical style, suggesting that the golfer’s fashion choice fits better in a fantasy film than on the fairways of a major championship. Ouch? Well, the other comments are just as brutal.
Another golf writer, Outkick’s Mark Harris, and Fried Egg Golf‘s official X account posted, “Sergio Garcia dresses like a recently divorced father of four who drives a sports car that he loves to tell you he paid cash for” and “How do you do, fellow kids?” Well, these ones don’t need an explanation either, but we will try anyway! It suggests that Garcia’s outfit choices evoke the image of a man trying to reclaim his youth and independence after a significant life change, such as a divorce. This type of dad might choose flashy, attention-grabbing clothing, perhaps to impress others or to signal that he’s still got it.
One golf fan took it a little further and said, “Well, James, it’s so you’ll mention it and give him, his team, and his tour attention. 👍” Well, if you’re looking at the problems heading the Saudi-backed league’s way, the comment makes sense. After years of persistent speculation about PGA Tour players moving to LIV, the current buzz focuses on whether LIV stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka might make a comeback to their former tour. The Fox deal hasn’t drawn many viewers. At LIV Golf Miami, competing with a lesser PGA Tour event, virtually no one tuned in (484,000 in the final round compared to the Texas Open’s 1.75 million viewers).
Lastly, a fan said, “40-year-old man wearing a red belt.” Again, it does not need an explanation! But, honestly, golf fans have a knack for turning a simple swing into a stand-up routine, proving that their wit is even sharper than their clubs!
