The Players Championship is up and running, with some of the world’s best players in the hunt for the PGA Tour’s flagship event. Among them, close friends Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth have their eyes set on the title. The two share a close camaraderie, which was evident during a moment of brilliance on the opening day of the Players Championship.

The two golfers were paired together for the first round of the tournament alongside fellow countryman Max Homa. After a late tee start, Thomas got into the thick of things immediately, making consecutive birdies on his first two holes.

But Thomas’ second birdie caught the eye for more than one reason. From the rough, the two-time major championship winner chipped for an exceptional birdie. The ball was placed at a significant distance from the hole, but it didn’t deter Thomas from making consecutive birdies.

Furthermore, his close friend, Jordan Spieth, was nearby during his shot. Even as the ball traveled towards the hole, the former showed a thumbs-up to his friend, which spoke volumes about the duo’s understanding of each other’s game. The ball eventually landed in the cup, lifting Thomas up on the table.

The pair are best friends on the course, but between them, who stands a better chance to claim the elusive Players Championship? If prior experience is anything to go by, Thomas has loads of it, having won the title in 2021.

The University of Alabama alum secured victory over English and present LIV golfer Lee Westwood by one stroke. Yet, it was a display of courage from Thomas, who rallied back from three strokes down at the halfway stage on Sunday to win the 2021 Players Championship.

While Spieth hasn’t won the tournament yet, he has plenty of experience playing at the iconic TPC Sawgrass. He has racked up eight appearances in the competition, and although he has missed the cut five times, his best performance was a fourth-place finish.
