‘We Were Touting Him as the Next Tiger Woods’: Paige Spiranac Names an Overrated PGA Tour Pro

Paige Spiranac thinks Collin Morikawa is an overrated player! While the golf world has always had nothing but praise for him, the former golfer doesn’t think the same. 

Spiranac shared her opinion about the PGA player on the latest episode of her podcast, ‘Playing a Round with Paige Renee.’

“We were touting him as the next Tiger Woods,” Paige said. She explained that the Tour pro had earned his success and fame. However, he lacks consistency. 

Morikawa turned pro at a very young age and tasted success early. Since Woods’ career began similarly, the golf world slated him as the next Tiger Woods.

A comparison made between them revealed that Morikawa has a lot of similarities with Tiger’s career. In their first 60 events, Tiger had 9 wins, whereas Morikawa had won 6 championships. Furthermore, Morikawa and Woods are the only two players to win a major and a World Golf Championship before turning 25

Even Spiranac admitted that his success in the first few years was excellent. However, his results these days are not consistent, and she doesn’t think he is worth the hype.

“You see someone like Cam Smith, who is now constantly winning,” said Paige in her podcast. “Or Sam Burns, who’s kind of always in the mix.”

The former golfer further explained that players like Cameron Smith and Sam Burns are always consistent with their results. Meanwhile, Morikawa is playing but doesn’t provide the same result as in his previous tournament.

In the four PGA starts Morikawa had this year, except for WGC Match Play, he has not won a tournament. On the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Genesis Invitational, he finished in the Top 5. Meanwhile, he missed the cut at the PLAYERS and finished 68th at the Valspar Championship. 

Although the young golfer advanced from the group stages, he got eliminated from the top 16 after competing with Abraham Ancer.

Morikawa began the year with a good start as he finished 5th at the Sentry event. However, he has lacked consistency ever since. Given that he is often compared to Woods, Spiranac thinks that he is an overrated player. Are you of the same opinion or do you feel otherwise?
