Rickie Fowler rocks prescription glasses on the PGA Tour

The first time people saw Fowler with his glasses was at the 2021 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. It was an overcast day and yet Fowler was rocking those Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 XL sunglasses. The golfer can be seen wearing the same sunglasses at the 2023 Scottish Open. The reason behind wearing those glasses is not a trend or a health condition like Phil Mickelson, but to help him see better.

Something most golf fans do not know about Fowler is that he has issues seeing far distances. The 34-year-old has struggled with his eyesight for quite some time, particularly in low-light conditions. Instead of going for a Lasik surgery, he donned prescription sunglasses.

“I always struggled with seeing more than, say, 150 yards and little things far away.” Fowler said.“The only time I start to struggle with some depth perception is in low light situations, like early morning or as the sun is going down. And so I just wanted to try another option, before going to Lasik down the road,” he added.

The glasses were a missing piece in the puzzle

According to Fowler, the glasses have improved his vision. While his condition is mild, Fowler’s eyesight measures -.75 in one eye and -.50 in the other. Glasses would have been seen on his face much sooner had it not been for his swing. The angle at which he swings impacted the glasses….a quick change, and now he can wear them.

After his T8 finish at the 2023 PGA Championship, where he wore the glasses, he claimed they were the missing part of his puzzle. He is still working on his swing to ensure the glasses always stay on. It has not been easy for the PGA Tour pro to get the hang of playing with them on.

“I always felt that with the nose piece, with how much I move sometimes in the swing it would get in the way and I would lose sight of the ball, so I didn’t like glasses forever,” Fowler explained.
