In 2019, everything seems to be going right for Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, with a sixth world championship, and now he is the European Sportsperson of the year. The British driver already took home this honor in 2014 when he won his first title with Mercedes and his second overall. In addition to that, he beat the record for the most points scored in a single season, which was incidentally set by him back in 2018.

The European Sportsperson of the Year 2019 was decided by a vote, and Lewis Hamilton won with 151 under his belt. As it turned out, he defeated the likes of Rafael Nadal by a mere 11 points, and the two were miles ahead of the third-place candidate. Nadal himself is the reigning World Number 1 in the ATP ranking and has won the US Open and Roland Garros. Meanwhile, a further 75 points away from Hamilton is Austrian skier Marcel Hirscher, who is the slalom world champion and runner-up in the giant slalom in downhill skiing.

Who Are the Sportsmen Behind Lewis Hamilton, Nadal and Hirscher?
In fourth place was Nadal’s rival, Novak Djokovic with 71 votes coming his way. The Serbian is already a three-time winner of the Sportsperson of the Year award back in 2011, 2015 and 2018.

However, there was a massive shock for Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, who won in 2016 and 2017. When he won in those two years, he became the first Portuguese sports star and the only footballer to be bestowed with this award. This time though, the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner found himself languishing in 18th place with 19 points.

To make matters more humiliating, Ronaldo was even behind Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman found himself sixth with 61 points after guiding Liverpool to Champions League glory and now, they are within touching distance of the Premier League title.
