Major League Baseball, being one of the oldest sports leagues in the USA, is an avid follower of traditions. Its players certainly do follow the smallest possible in-game traditions as well. A few of them are old, as they started in the early 1900s. New York Yankees Captain Aaron Judge is also one of those people who follow the in-game traditions.  Although, from the looks of it, it does not seem like All Rise goes deep into the details of these traditions. It is because, in his recent interview with the Fanatics, he did not show any loyalty to the basic item of an in-game tradition.

What is the tradition that Aaron Judge shows no loyalty to?

One of the oldest in-game traditions of baseball that have been going on for over a century now is chewing bubble gum. One would say that if a player follows a tradition passionately enough, he would develop loyalty to one kind of bubble gum. But that is certainly not the case for Yankees’ outfielder Aaron Judge.

When in the rapid-fire round of his interview with Fanatics a few months ago, he got asked about the bubble gum he is most loyal to, he did not name it. Instead, he said, “I’m a connoisseur. I kind of like them all. I’ve got no loyalty when it comes to bubblegum. That’s for sure.”

Most of the players are seen chewing bubble gum in the dugouts. Some do it for one reason, others do it for another. But according to a report by the Baseball Bible, the reason behind Judge following this tradition is superstition.

How is Judge superstitious?

Apparently, the reasons behind players’ chewing gum are physical, practical, mental, and others like superstition. The Captain, however, falls into the last category.

There is a well-known fact about Aaron Judge and his bubble gum. It is that he chews two fresh pieces of Dubble Bubble sugar-free gum before his first at-bat of the game. And if this is considered, then that means, Judge does show loyalty to this tradition.

Do you think it is some kind of superstition that Aaron Judge chews a similar kind of bubble gum before his first at-bat?
