The offseason saga of Major League Baseball teams and free agents has gotten really tense. The negotiations involving “The Boras Four have reached a fever pitch. The four big names, Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Blake Snell, and Jordan Montgomery, whom Scott Boras represents, are unassigned to this day. Did the super-agent play the wrong cards?

Well, there have been speculations that Boras might have overestimated their market value. Based on the fact that no team has chosen any of them yet, it appears that he miscalculated the current economic value. The uncharacteristically sluggish market is not treating the 71-year-old and his clients well.

Known for his aggressive tactics and ability to extract a maximum value for his clients, Boras has been a part of stalled negotiations and growing frustration. This is becoming more and more evident over time. In fact, teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Atlanta Braves, and the Houston Astros who are big spenders, have relied on internal solutions of not pursued other options. The 2023 World Series champion, Texas Rangers too, seems hesitant owing to their financial concerns.

Another key factor behind the slowdown is the ever-changing media landscape. Boras had dismissed concerns about the transition to streaming. The super agent suggested confidently that it wouldn’t affect the teams’ ability to spend. However, some team owners do worry about potential future revenue losses and are thereby tightening their belts. This conscious precaution clashes with Boras’ historically high asking prices. Yet he seemed unfazed by this miscalculation.

It’s possible that speculatively, this delay is a strategic move. The delayed negotiations could mean that he is trying to create leverage through injuries or other unpredictable circumstances. Nevertheless, the prolonged wait has impacted not only the Boras Four but also other free agents waiting in the wings. One can only hope that this is not a misfire.
