UFC lightweight veteran Charles Oliveira is all set for his clash against Michael Chandler at UFC 262. They will headline the main event for the vacant lightweight championship.

While both are busy preparing for the showdown, ‘Do Bronx’ has been awarded a 3rd degree BJJ black belt weeks prior to their title bout. The submission maestro took to Twitter to announce the same and thanked his coaches and fans alike.

He said, Hey! Quick update here… 2day I got my 3rd degree. Yeah, I was promoted, by legend Jorge “Macaco” Patino, and prof. Tavela Very proud! Thanx God, thanx fans…

This achievement shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The Brazilian incorporates heavy usage of grappling skills in his octagon fights. He has picked up nineteen submission victories out of 30 career wins. This record puts him ahead of everyone as no one has racked up so many victories with the help submissions.

If we dive a little deeper into his submission records, he has notched up submission wins by calf slicer, anaconda choke, triangle choke, guillotine, and rear-naked choke.

His grappling skills were at full force against a seasoned veteran Tony Ferguson when both clashed at UFC 256 last year. Ferguson is himself a BJJ black belt but had a tough time dealing with ‘Do Bronx’ as the latter was putting relentless pressure on him.

Oliveira has now followed suit in receiving the 3rd degree BJJ black belt after the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor and recently retired former lightweight champion ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Oliveira is on a rampage for quite some time. He has racked up 8 straight wins, out of which 5 were submission victories, to finally knock on the door for the championship.

His streak started with a win over Clay Guida at UFC 225 via guillotine choke. In between, he had some notable victories against David Teymur, Jared Gordon, and Kevin Lee. His last win against Ferguson came via unanimous decision at UFC 256.

Finally, he is one step away from his dream of becoming a lightweight champion and would be itching to bring his grappling game against Chandler. The latter would be wary of the situation and will be trying to negate it as much as he could. Who do you think is going to win?
