Some would say Richard Childress Racing‘s Austin Hill, and some would name the latest driver as Jimmie Johnson.

Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill claims the Xfinity Series regular-season championship

Austin Hill, who signed a multi-year contract extension last month to declare his intentions, has been nothing short of a force of nature in the series. Consistency and a clean brand of racing have propelled him to overpower Jimmie Johnson’s latest driver and a strong contender, John Hunter Nemechek.

Richard Childress understood the task at hand and made haste in extending the 29-year-old’s contract. This makes him a mainstay at Xfinity, unless things go south between the parties. The extension also made him a possible candidate for a Cup Series spot.

Announcing his extension in style, the No. 21 Chevy clinched the regular-season championship at Kansas Speedway on Saturday. Wrapping up an incredible season that saw him win four races, 14 top 5s, and 18 top 10s, Austin Hill became the man to beat this season.

John Hunter Nemechek, on the other hand, missed out on the championship by a margin of 23 points, despite winning six times this season. A commendable achievement considering this was his rookie season.

A few days ago, Jimmie Johnson and Legacy Motor Club managed to find a deal with John Hunter Nemechek, who is arguably the best talent in Xfinity as of now. A young driver with great potential, proving himself in his rookie season, and with former experience in the top-flight, Nemechek is the perfect recruit for Legacy Motor Club. With the team speculated to shift manufacturers to Toyota, this move could very well work out in JHN’s favor.

John Hunter Nemechek brought out his best form on Saturday. From the beginning of the race, he showed prowess in the Joe Gibbs Racing #20 Supra to dominate Stage 1. The performance reflected his caliber in the car and showed the world the form he has been in, which has landed him six wins and the most playoff points this season.

Another big winner at the race was Parker Kligerman. In a similar fashion to Bubba Wallace, Kligerman clenched his first ever playoff spot with pride and assurance, finishing 4th in the #48 Chevy. Runner-up Brandon Jones tried his level best to close in on Nemechek, but he was too far ahead to be caught.

Overall, Kansas provided the fans with some quality racing, which was amplified by the urgency to qualify for the final playoff spot available. Many fans could argue that this was similar to the Cup Series race at Daytona two weeks ago.
