Ever since NASCAR announced a change in its short track package to sustain better overtaking and racing, fans and drivers alike were immediately of the opinion that the solution just wasn’t enough. The larger consensus remained that the solution to lackluster racing was to move on to a higher hp package than the current 670 hp one. With Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson claiming that the sport can change the current package as soon as next weekend to sustain more horsepower, the pressure has been increasing on NASCAR to at least entertain the idea. So after veteran insider Brian Murphy pointed out the endurance of the 750+ horsepower Garage56 Camaro, the NASCAR community couldn’t help but pile the pressure even further.

The Garage56’s formidable performance at the 24 Hour of Le Mans proves to be a double-edged sword for NASCAR

The main benefit of the doubt that the community had been giving the sports’ centered officials was centred around the idea that adding more horsepower to the current platform was just not possible. However, NASCAR officials have stated that OEMs would prefer lower figures, citing that higher hp numbers ran a risk of hampering the arrival of a fourth OEM.

However, many primary entities, including 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin, have spoken out about the ease with which NASCAR could implement the change. Whilst Dale Earnhardt Jr and fans were still skeptical of Hamlin’s claims, Garage 56’s Le Mans entry could prove to be the final nail in the horsepower debate coffin.

Taking to X, veteran insider and RFK Racing’s Quality Control Specialist, Brian Murphy added fuel to the fire by highlighting the Garage56 Camaro ZL1’s 750+ hp power train, and how it had managed to run the distance of over five 400-mile races without stopping. He stated, “The @NASCAR56 lasted 20 hours and 9 minutes, 254 laps, 2,176 miles of racing with 750+ horsepower and nearly the exact same driveline at LeMans before its failure.”

It’s no secret just how beneficial the Garage56 entry driven by Jimmie Johnson and Co. was for NASCAR’s global reach, but it seems it may have backfired when it comes to the horsepower debate. After fans got wind of the Garage56 Camaro ZL1’s success with the exact package fans and drivers have been asking for, the entire community erupted against the officials on X.

As fans began analyzing the Garage56 Camaro’s powertrain in comparison to that of the Next Gen car, they immediately pointed out how the Le Mans success warranted NASCAR to introduce a similar performing car for the Cup Series. A user shared, “I’ve been saying this since they were testing the G56. I heard it was near 800 but still. No excuses for NASCAR not running more horsepower in these cars” .

Others were also curious to know if 900, and not 750, horsepower was more achievable for Cup races. The user asked Murphy, “Do you think 900 would be feasible for a whole race weekend?” To which the insider left a simple response, “Yes..”

Speaking of the Garage56 entry’s endurance and ability to run for over 20 hours, a user also lashed out at the officials. They stated, “So FIVE 400-mile races. I’m done hearing the cost-cutting excuses” And that wasn’t all. Murphy also pointed out how the cars were able to take ‘far more abuse..

Speaking of Murphy’s credibility as an insider, a user also shared, “If there’s anyone I’m trusting on the NASCAR horsepower debate, it’s you.” Whilst other fans were more keen to point out the driver’s grievances, with one even writing,“When the drivers say it’s stagnant, almost anything is worth trying”.
