It’s true. Victory tastes the sweetest when you’ve fought hard to achieve it. And it looks like Hendrick Motorsports champion Chase Elliott has one such battle waiting for him. After missing six Cup races due to a broken knee, the #9 driver made his comeback behind the wheel last week at Martinsville. However, since his return, questions about his eligibility to qualify for the playoffs have been doing rounds.

It is important to note that Elliott was granted a medical waiver by the governing body. And this has provided him with his postseason eligibility. However, to qualify for the postseason, the driver has to meet another requirement of winning at least one regular season race or gathering the right amount of points.

What challenges does Chase Elliott have ahead of him?

Race winners usually qualify for the playoffs. However, only 16 drivers will be able to make the cut. On a closer analysis, it becomes clear that the new Next-Gen cars can produce a higher number of race winners. This means that more than 16 players might register a win during the 28-race long season.

And that’s where Elliott might face a huge challenge.

If more than 16 players clinch a victory throughout the season, the drivers with multiple wins will have an edge over others. Moreover, the drivers with a win and more points will rank higher in the points table, making their way into the qualifiers.

Currently, Elliott is in the 32nd position with zero wins and 76 points. Hence, in order to make the cut, the #9 driver will have to win multiple races and accumulate as many points as possible to climb up the standings.

Chase Elliott will have to fight an uphill battle in order to make his way to the playoffs. However, instead of being dreary or agitated about it, the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion has decided to embrace what lies ahead.

In a short clip shared by Fox reporter Bob Pockrass, Elliott said, “About a challenge, really. It’s kind of unique and kinda fun. Like you know, either win and you’re in, or don’t and you fail. So, I kinda like it.”

The Hendrick Motorsports driver registered a top-10 finish in his comeback race at Martinsville Speedway. Furthermore, Elliott will be next seen in the GEICO 500 at Talladega this weekend.
