Kyle Busch may be a lot of things but he is certainly an excellent racer—arguably, one of the best drivers of his generation. To win two Cup Series championships, register 60 wins, and finish in the top five 236 times is no child’s play. Having said that, Rowdy Busch recently expressed some regret in context to Joe Gibbs Racing.

The documentary Rowdy was released earlier this month on Amazon, and it has given us a lot of insight into Busch’s character. Moreover, the 37-year-old has been quite forthcoming with his approach and recently, one of his close acquaintances revealed one of his regrets while making the documentary.

Kyle Busch regrets not capitalizing on his opportunities

Derek Daughtery has been a long-time friend of Busch and is also the executive producer of the documentary. Recently, “Awful Announcing” got in touch with him to get some more details concerning Rowdy. Derek opened up on a lot of critical aspects of the documentary, including how the 90 minute-film affected Kyle.

When asked if the documentary has Rowdy reflecting or admitting mistakes of the past or does it showcase Rowdy’s unapologetic self, Derek replied, “The funny thing is that when I wrote the whole story out, that I wanted was him to look at a camera and say, ‘Hey, I’m just Kyle Busch, and I’m here to race and win and do a burnout.’

“But even (Kyle) knows, ‘Hey, this is only the first half, I want to win. Derek, I still want to win three or four more championships. I know, I want to with Joe Gibbs Racing, I probably threw away three championships.'”

There is no denying that Kyle Busch gave Joe Gibbs Racing a memorable 15 years. From 2015 to 2019, the Las Vegas-born driver was in terrific form for the NASCAR heavyweights. He won the championships in 2015 and 2019, but what happened between those three years was also interesting.

Busch finished third, second, and fourth in 2016, 2017, and 2018 Cup Series seasons, respectively. These are slim margins we are talking about here. He had the best chances of converting those margins into titles back then when he was in amazing rhythm.

It is not that Rowdy was talking mainly about those three years, but yes, he must regret not making the most of those opportunities after getting so close. Nevertheless, Derek confirmed how the 2018 Coca-Cola 600 winner is now motivated to make it big with his current team Richard Childress Racing. Given his abilities and grit, we surely cannot write Busch off this season.
