“I Suck, I Am Not Good” – Joey Logano Reveals Who Gave Him the Brutal Reality Check in His NASCAR Career

The journey of Joey Logano in the NASCAR Cup Series began with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) back in 2008. At just 18 years old, he was the youngest driver ever to compete in the Cup Series. However, when he went up to the top flight of American stock car racing, there was something that he realized. While talking to David Gravel in an interview, the now Team Penske driver spoke about when he got a reality check during his early Cup Series stint.

During the interview, Logano said, “Well, it’s funny. I mean, that gives you what you need sometimes, and I needed a bit of a reality check. My whole career, I relied on my talent and it was enough. The bottom line was, it was good enough to go out there and win races. I was the youngest everything growing up… I must be pretty f*cking good, right? And I started drinking my own Kool-Aid. I was believing in every bit of it. Until I got to the level that everybody was good…”

Later on, he mentioned how everyone else on the lower end of the field would pass him with ease. Talking about that he mentioned, “uh oh I suck. I’m not good.“

Joey Logano is a two-time champion now

Despite his early success, in 2012, JGR decided to let Logano go. The decision came as a surprise for many in the NASCAR community. Moreover, since, he had achieved several notable accomplishments during his time with JGR, including winning his first Cup Series race in 2009 and several top-five and top-ten finishes. However, Logano quickly found a new opportunity with Team Penske.

He joined the team in 2013, and since then he has become one of the top drivers in the Cup Series. Furthermore, he went on to win multiple races. Also fought for the championship multiple times until he earned his first Cup Series championship in 2018. Furthermore, his second championship in 2022.

In retrospect, Logano’s time with JGR was a great launchpad for his career, despite the setback of being let go. It allowed him to establish himself as a competitive driver and build a solid foundation for his future success. This is quite evident now, given his second championship last year.
