Just as the NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville was reaching its business end, a massive multi-car crash took place, involving at least a dozen cars. It was one of those ‘parking lot’ wrecks as many cars piled up one after the other, kicking off with initial contact between Kyle Busch and Chris Buescher.
The impact brought out a red flag in the race with 114 laps to go. In a race that kept getting chaotic again and again, this wreck brought out the 14th caution on the day. However, none of the cautions before this one were caused by something so big.
It all started when Busch and Buescher made contact with each other exiting Turn 2. Both cars spun sideways and with nowhere to go for many cars behind them, they all crashed in a massive pile-up.

Which other drivers were involved in the massive crash in the NASCAR race?
Busch‘s No. 18 and Buescher‘s No. 17 cars suffered heavy damage in that crash, as did the multiple cars that wrecked behind them. Among those involved were Erik Jones and Cole Custer, who made initial contact with the two cars that began the wreck.
Michael McDowell, Daniel Suarez, Brad Keselowski, Alex Bowman, Justin Haley, Ryan Preece, Anthony Alfredo, Aric Almirola, and Cody Ware also suffered significant damage.

Suarez and Preece were hit the worst as both cars caught fire soon after the crash. The former was quite frustrated with William Byron and blamed him for spoiling his day; he also threw a water bottle on Byron’s car as he passed by later on.
Luckily, Suarez got out of the car unscathed, but his race was over. Keselowski, Jones, McDowell, Bowman, Haley, and Preece also ended up in the garage.

Keselowski suffered from handling issues all day and the crash was the final nail in the coffin. He was one of the favorites to win at Martinsville. The No. 2 Team Penske car was heavily destroyed after the crash.
On the other hand, Kyle Busch, who also spun earlier in the race, took a damaged car to a top-10 finish. Buescher also continued and finished in 13th place.
Busch’s teammate, Martin Truex Jr, became the first driver this season to record a second win. Truex Jr, who won last season’s Martinsville race in the regular season, held off Chase Elliott for Sunday’s win.
