On the international stage, few teams have dominated international basketball quite like Team USA. They regularly rank as one of the best teams in the world due to their vast talent pool. In fact, they have won four consecutive Olympic gold medals. However, their performances in recent tournaments have been worrisome, especially their FIBA World Cup performance in which they finished fourth. Because of this reason, the 2024 Paris Olympics have become very important for Team USA.

Top players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant have already committed. However, Draymond Green has failed to make the cut for the Paris Olympics due to his suspension. In the latest episode of the Draymond Green Show, Green revealed that he felt “disappointed” for not making the 41-man shortlist. He said, “Disappointed? Yeah of course, to have an opportunity to play in three Olympics, it’s crazy. I am not sure the amount of people that’s had the opportunity.”

The Golden State Warriors, and Draymond Green in particular, are enduring a torrid season. Draymond has found himself in trouble with the NBA authorities this season due to his consistent unsportsmanlike conduct. In December 2023, Green received an indefinite suspension from the NBA because he punched Suns’ center Jusuf Nurkić in the face. Green had to undergo an intensive procedure laid out by the NBA, which included therapy and counseling. After three weeks, the NBA rescinded his suspension on 6th January.

Draymond’s suspension, coupled with the Warriors’ poor performances, have cost Green a spot in Team USA’s roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, his teammate Stephen Curry and good friend LeBron James will probably lead the USA in their bid to secure a fifth straight gold medal at the 2024 Olympics.

LeBron James hopes to lead the “Redeem Team” 2.0

Following Team USA’s underwhelming performance at the FIBA World Cup this offseason, LeBron James expressed a clear desire to lead Team USA in the 2024 Olympics. According to the Athletics’ Shams Charania, “LeBron James wants to represent Team USA at 2024 Paris Olympics and is spearheading group of future Hall of Famers – including Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant – prepared to commit.”

NBA superstars like Jayson Tatum, Curry, and Kevin Durant were all included in the recently released 41-man shortlist. Furthermore, Joel Embiid, the reigning MVP, has also committed to Team USA instead of representing France on the international stage. With such a loaded roster, Team USA is a heavy favorite to win their fifth successive gold at the Paris Olympics.
