Over the past few decades, the NBA has become one of the most popular sporting leagues in the world. However, in order to remain at the top, the league needs to constantly innovate and attract new fans. The most effective method to draw in fans is by marketing a generational player who can captivate fans not only with his on-court talents but charisma as well.

For the better part of the last two decades, LeBron James has assumed the mantle of the face of the league alongside Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. However, with LeBron being 39-years-old, and Curry and Durant both 35, it’s only a matter of time before their otherworldly abilities diminish. Several stars such as Luka Dončić, Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Devin Booker have been touted to take over from LeBron and co. However, 3x All-Star Gilbert Arenas thinks the ‘face-of-the league’ tag is Jayson Tatum’s for the taking.

During the latest episode of the Nightcap podcast, Gilbert Arenas stated that European players like Luka and Jokic would never become the face of the league over Tatum. He further expanded on his point by saying, “I never seeing American push European. It’s just not a thing. As much as we want to, they are still going to put an American brand to their American brand.”

Although players such as Jokic, Giannis, and Luka possess the necessary skills and talent to potentially become the next face of the league, their reserved personalities may prevent them from being marketed as such. Furthermore, they aren’t American. Despite the NBA’s evolution into a global sports league, there has never been a non-American player marketed as the face of the league. Will that change in the future, or will it be an American who takes the mantle from LeBron?

Assuming the role of the premier player in the NBA carries substantial responsibilities. It demands maintaining a flawless public image, demonstrating exemplary conduct both on and off the court, and serving as a model for fans. For years, LeBron has assumed such responsibilities to a tee. But the NBA would soon need another player to step into LeBron’s shoes, as it’s only a matter of time before the Lakers’ star retires.

Jayson Tatum could potentially fill the void that would arise in LeBron’s absence. Possessing both the requisite skills and charisma for the role, Tatum could step into the spotlight seamlessly. Additionally, his Celtics team consistently contends as favorites for the championship. During a recent interview with the Athletic, Tatum said, “I feel like it’s mine to take. I do feel like, if we win a championship, it would be more distinguished and clear. But I understand I’m in that shortlist for sure.”
