LeBron James has maintained his position as the face of the NBA for the longest tenure. Now entering his 21st season and facing talks of passing the torch, he shows no signs of relinquishing the role. A part of it is his enduring on-court performances. However, his off-court demeanor also adds significantly to sustaining his chart-topping status.

Moreover, his vast connections throughout the league and beyond bring light to his ponderous footsteps, setting him apart as one of a kind. A significant figure amongst them is Rich Paul, James’ close friend and agent, whose introduction to LeBron occurred casually at an airport in 2002.

As one of the most prominent agents in the league, Paul represents a constellation of superstars, engaging in public relations and managing player identities to uphold their standards. Behind his versatile resume, Rich Paul offers insights into an approach to selecting the next face of the league.

Rich Paul claims that the torch is passed on with purpose

In a recent interview with Chris Haynes, Rich delved into the process of choosing LeBron James’ successor in the league. Initially, he asserted that it’s not a decision for anyone to make but to naturally emerge when the time is right. However, he provided a brief perspective on frontrunners.

He highlighted Jayson Tatum for embodying the ideal on-and-off-court persona, Anthony Edwards for his exceptional talent, and mentioned D’Aaron Fox, Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and others. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of complete skills and dedication over stardom, stating, “You can be popular but not be important.”

Delving into the intricacies of reaching such a level, Rich outlined key responsibilities, such as a comprehensive understanding of the business, accountability, and a genuine kinship-like connection with the NBA. Furthermore, he emphasized that it’s a 24×7 role, a factor often overlooked and a cause of ongoing disconnect.

Who can keep the flame burning after LeBron James?

Stephen Curry revolutionized the game. However, he will be nearing 38 years of age if LeBron James decides to play one more season past his current contract. Kevin Durant is following a similar suit. With that, since his draft, Victor Wembanyama has been labeled as the league’s next face. Mostly due to his unique set of skills at a towering 7’4 height. However, LeBron James echoes being an ideal person off the court, staging Jayson Tatum to better fit the mold right away.

However, the league anticipates the rise of several young players. With that, several questions revolve like debris around the narrative. Will it be an international sensation or an American player? Will the future of the NBA be dominated by modern centers like Wembanyama or athletic wings like Anthony Edwards? Or could a new player emerge, capable of steering the modern, three-point-heavy NBA?
