Not long ago, Chris Paul and the Pheonix Suns were at the top of the NBA world, playing in the 2021 NBA Finals. However, since the Greek Freak and the Milwaukee Bucks got the better of them, the Suns have seemingly embarked on a steep downhill. Moreover, a 37-year-old Paul, who took center stage in that dream run to the Finals, has prompted the Desert franchise to rethink their options, considering the veteran guard’s fast-approaching ‘decline’.

With the NBA trade deadline right around the corner, the bustling trade market has forced the top brass in Phoenix to look for attractive trade options to shake up the roster, especially at the point guard position.

Since Giannis Antetokounmpo hanged a 50-piece in game 6 of the 2021 NBA Finals, the Suns have fallen off a cliff in terms of their standing in the league. Currently, they are hovering around .500 with an underwhelming record of 27-25 as the seventh seed in the Western Conference. One of the major reasons behind their struggles can be traced back to the ‘decline’ in form of the ageing Chris Paul. The 12x All-Star has witnessed a dip across the board. Consequently, besides the NBA world berating the 6x steals champion, the Suns’ management is also taking stock of the situation.

According to a Bleacher Report article, the Suns may be more open to finding a long-term replacement for Paul than most people realize. Moreover, it appears that the top brass in Phoenix have accepted the fate of Paul.

Eric Pincus, a senior writer at BR, reported, “Despite changes at the very top, the team is expected to make more significant changes after the season, but sources say the team has come to terms with the likelihood that Paul is starting to decline (38 years old in May).”

As per his latest contract, the 5x assists champion is expected to make over $60 million in the next two seasons. However, most of that figure is linked with incentives and other payroll alternatives. Interestingly, the Suns’ owe Paul only $15.8 million in guaranteed money. A potential trade before the trade deadline or in the off-season can certainly relieve the team from financial burden as they are currently paying nearly $50 million in luxury tax and penalties.

According to experts, the Suns may get in bed with the Minnesota Timberwolves for a swap between D’Angelo Russell and Paul. However, one of the most exciting prospects among fans is the possibility of Paul joining his long-time friend, LeBron James in Los Angeles. The Lakers, who have been struggling all season, are also under immense pressure to make major changes in their team.

The common sense trade between the two parties, according to NBA fans, happens to be an exchange between Russell Westbrook and Paul. Moreover, the Lakers could acquire additional role players to match Westbrook’s inflated contract in the trade. For the cherry on top, they will also reduce their luxury tax liability with Paul’s contract.
